Q: Depo shots and normalization of the period
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 27th, 2008
i stopped taking the depo 2 years a go after being on it for 2 years 3 months, it took a year for any kind of bleed, very irregular, sometimes nothing for 2 months. From March to June this year they were every 4 weeks and since then it has been a heavy bleed then spotting exactly 2 weeks later for approx 4 days. Me and husband are wanting to get pregnant. My doctor it is my body reacting to the depo but I just wanted a second opinion. Can it really take this long to get out of your system?

It is true that the body needs time to establish its normal reproductive functions after going off hormonal contraception. A woman experiences irregular cycles as long as regular ovulations are not established. The period for normalization is longer if hormonal contraception was in the form of depo-shots.

Two years is a long enough period of time for the axis hypothalamus-pituitary-ovaries to recover so I believe you should consult a gynecologist for your sterility problem. First, you need to examine if you have ovulations or not. Then you may need to use ovulation inductors, if necessary.
