So last year tired of taking the pill cause it made me sick and not able to use the patch due to it searing my skin. I decided to get the depo shot. I read online its side effects could cause mood swings. nothing i wasnt used to really I tended to have bad pms mood swings. Anyways, at the doctors office the nurse giving me the shot made me sign a waver and even had to ask permission from the main doc to give me the shot given my history of sever depression.

So not even a week after i got the cursed shot my moods changed. I used to be a very sweet person, but since that shot my moods change rapidly and i have no controll of them, my PMS is ten times worse then it used to be. I never got another depo shot hoping that the effects would wear off. But i was wrong, its been a year. I'm still screwed up.

Are there any cases of depo causing a permanent change in a persons moods?

Doctor
Depo shot's effectiveness lasts about 3 months so I believe that side effects (including depression and mood swings) from the shot should also last for about 3 months. The side effects may even last longer than 3 months but one year is definitely to long and I believe that your mood changes are no longer due to the shot.

You can consult some mental helath professional about your problem.

Depo-Provera IS known to stay in your system even after you've stopped receiving the shots, because it is such a high dose of hormones each time you get a shot. I've heard tell of some women being unable to conceive up to three years after getting off of Depo, even without prolonged use of the drug.

I'm getting off Depo myself, next month - after a year of use - and I've experienced something very similiar. I've been obnoxiously moody and I've even had some anxiety problems. I'm fairly worried myself that the side effects are going to last after I stop getting the shots.

In any case, I know if I were you, I'd talk to my doctor just to make sure that this is normal.

Depo messed up my life .... I have been with my boyfriend for over 3 years and now were rocky because I've been so moody and snappy.. I was NEVER like this before the shot and now my own family can't even stand me. I can't even stand myself sometimes .... I know for a fact this was because of depo. My mom begged me to get off this terrible BC so I did but I still feel all these side effects and the shot was given to ne in the middle of June 09

We learn the most from each other.
My gyno told me that depo should be out of my system 3 months after stopping it (so 6 months after my last and only shot). No offence to the doctors on sites like this, but I do not think they specialize in depo studies and the doctor above gave a very generic response that may be in accordance to what the pharma companies claim about depo, but it is obviously not the reality we are discovering as we read and share our personal experiences. If you need to see a doctor, make sure you see a gyno and not a family practice physician or a nurse practitioner.

Depo shot hypothesis
I've also been on depo for about a year and I get a lot of horrible mood swings and depression. I don't know if it really is the Depo or is it just me, but I will get off this shot starting today and will update on this status on future results

Depo
I had the depo in early dec 2011 as the pill hadn't worked effectively resulting in pregnancy but that reaulted in miscarriage unfortunately... So depo was suggested to me, I'd had it in 07 but had very very bad headaches I ha to take epilepsy tablets to calm them. Anyway since I've had this injection Im over sleeping, constant bleeding, anxiety, depression and my god the worst ever moods. Plus I've completely lost my sex drive! I'm
Suprised he's still with me... I really am. I am not getting this is ever again! EVER!

Update
So I'm updating my "recovery" to a life without Depo and I got to say I have noticed change. Yes, I do have a very bad temper if I get mad. And I still have these headaches but I've gained more energy since then. I also don't get depressed or too emotional that it takes up my whole day. I have to say I don't plan on using any birth control for a while besides condoms.

Mood Swings are 100% LEGIT
I was on Depo-Provera since January of 2007 until February of 2011 which was my last shot. It took me until September to regain a period which was only 2 days or so and then I didn't get another one for a while and then from December 2011 to about April 2012 I did not have a normal cycle every month. Ex: February I bled every day except for maybe 3 days, and every month after I would get my period about every 2 weeks.

I did not gain any weight while on Depo though!

MOOD SWINGS: This is where it gets crazy and it will be my decision on NEVER getting this shot again, even though everything about it was wonderful. Being off Depo now for a year I have realized suddenly since about November/December 2011 that I have been EXTREMELY happy! Finally I put two and two together. While on Depo I was with a boyfriend before it and we were inseperable, then after receiving the shot I quickly felt annoyed with him and no longer felt in love. With my parents I was very touchy and found myself getting infuriated with the smallest things and found myself in screaming matches for no reason. I would also cry every single day for the most part. Over nothing. I could have went to get groceries and forgotten a form of payment and had to walk out with nothing and I would bawl hysterically for 15 good minutes. I could have gotten a C when I thought I would get an A, I could have just had a lot to do and instead of sitting down and starting it.. I would cry. I could just look at my boyfriend at the time and if he looked the least bit mad over something, I would instantly cry. My parents and boyfriend constantly were saying "stop crying!" and yet I couldn't I had no idea how to stop it. Now I cannot even remember the last time I got extremely mad or cried.. or even teared up!!! ITS AMAZING!!!

WATCH FOR MOOD SWINGS PEOPLE!!! BE AWARE!

Due to my periods and mood changes I would say that after 4 years of receiving a shot it took 9 months approx. to get everything out of my system

Depressed on Depo
I got a Depo shot for the first time last week. I wanted to go on the pill, but was told because I'm on a seizure medication the pill would not work for me. I wish I had left without anything! Over the past week I have turned from an mild mannered 30 year old into a raging psycho. I yell at people, lay around in bed thinking about all the ways people closest to me secretly hate me, and I in turn hate them. I've been picking fights with my boyfriend who is too sweet to retaliate... And when I say something rude and someone does have the courage to talk back to me, I start crying. I would rather buy tampons, condoms, and Midol every month than ever feel the way I'm feeling right now again. It's got to the point where I'm a downright miserable person. I'm aware of my increasing mood-swings, but in the middle of one am helpless to control my out-burst. I hope my relationship and friendships survive this wild ride. I am calling my doctor's office today to see if maybe there's someway I can go on an anti-depressant until this shot gets out of my system. I'll never do it again... That's for sure!

Are the side effects of the depo shot permanent?
i have been on depo provera for only 6 months and i just recently felt the extreme mood swings. I get mad for no reason, when I wake up in the morning the only thing I can think about is that why my husband doesn't seem to love me even if he does, very bad anxiety, I get crying spells for no reason, and I am quite paranoid. I haven't been like this not since I had my depo shot... I am trying to get off of it but scared at the same time that these side effects might be permanent.

I'm on depo provera too and I have been in a bad mood ever since! I'm probably going to get off of it because not only am I in a bad mood all of the time, I also bleed constantly and don't want to have sex or anything with my boyfriend. So I am guessing mood swings with this birth control are common

I AM JUST GONNA KEEP IT REAL.... The depo shot sucks! I am on my 3rd shot and feel like i am going through menopause! I have nausea through out the day, hot flashes, constipated, bloating, not able to sleep good at night, no cycle and don't feel like doing nothing anymore. I am nervous to leave sometimes because i am scared i will start feeling bad!! That is no way to live at all!!

I was told that this shot wears off when you do not get it anymore... i think when the shot wears off and you still feel bad i think it takes some time for our hormones to get normal. Just gotta hang in there and ride it off... But the shot wears off and loses it effects when you miss your appt or whatever. Like me I go back between APril 19-May 3... I am assuming after a fews days or may 4th it should be gone and I should start using condoms, ooor i should start using condoms during that week (April 19-May3).

I just want to say that I am not on here to dog any of the doctors on this site, but from being on this shot and talking to a nurse that is 60 years old and the depo shot is her expertise for a veeeeery long time what she told me does not even come anywhere near what these doctors say. She told me the reason that i feel so bad is because of the hormones in the shot, and that any lady can feel these side effects at any time. That we are all are different and some ladies will get side effects and some won't.

Also, some of these doctors look fake to me as well. It is scary... I would strongly advise you ladies to either call where you get birth control from, or call your doctors and tell them your problems you are having! I do not mean disrespect. I am just keeping it real! I had a doctor on here tell me that I should get the 4th shot and THEN get another form of BC.. then I asked him what for and he never responded back!

I also told him about what was going on and he said he did not know if those were side effects of the depo shot. I was thinking why are saying you're an expert in birth control then? And how would he know if i should take the 4th injection too? SO, ladies this site is some times scary... I am not saying all the doctors are fake, but it is very clear that some doctors are fake!

I'll tell you a story from my wifes and my experience. After several years of her getting the shot, we almost got divorced. Her mood was always negative, and the sex just sucked (never in the mood and always painful). When I told a guy I was working with about what was happening at home, and I mentioned about this shot she gets for birth control, he looked at me in horror and said get her off of that NOW! How's you sex life? I said it sucked, and he said his wife had the same thing, and after she quit getting the shot, things turned around.
Our lives have completely changed, and I'm happy to say we made it and couldn't be happier. Oh yeah- the sex is back on track!

nofanofpain: That is awesome your wife is back to normal!! DId she start getting normal when the shot wore off?

This shot is horrible, for real! I have no sex drive at all... i just don't even feel like it... Cus either this shot makes me feel bad or i just don't even care to do anything, seriously! It is horrible. I will never get this shot ever again... i have read/heard all kinds of bad stuff about this shot! I haven't heard one good story, yet.

I am talking to a young lady now that had got only one shot of the depo and got off this shot and suffers from stomach problems... and she been off of it since Nov.

do yourself a favor and don't get the depo shot
I had to switch birth controls because the pill gave my daily, intense, migraines. I got the depo shot. Now, after two months, I have lost myself. I am angry and depressed. Every other aspect of me has be overwhelmed by the moods. After 7 months of the best relationship of my life, it's spiraling downwards and fast. This birth control is the only side of my life that has changed--my other stresses have lessened (spring term ended last week, I have a house with awesome people to live with, my family has been treating me well, and I figured out my majors). Yet, through all of this, the depo shot has ruined it.
Also, something that not many people have mentioned, maybe this doesn't happen to everyone, but my sex drive has never been so low. I don't even want to cuddle with my boyfriend, let alone have sex, which defeats the whole purpose of being on birth control.
The only good thing is that I haven't gotten my period or cramps since the shot.
I sincerely wish that I didn't get the depo shot. One of the worst things about this is that the depo shot was really one of my last options for birth control.

terrible mood swings, depression at times, and anxiety with Depo
Honestly! I'm on the depo for 6 months now and i just went into the doctors to get my third and told her my symptoms and she's like get off it NOW. I have terrible mood swings. I will get worked up when my boyfriend doesn't call or text me or want to see me all the time. I feel myself getting farther and farther away from the real me. I'm becoming so different. Our fights are SO bad that it sends me into deep depression and I have thoughts of suicide. This depo, although convenient, its a very serious problem for me and I have to see a therapist to talk about my issues. LIKE I'm known to be all around happy go lucky and I feel that on this shot, I complain all the time and I stress and have anxiety about everything! I just want to be normal again. I got off the shot and now im trying a low dose of the pill. I hope this works and I feel the pain of all these women who didn't think that depression would happen to them
