at age 65 my dentist wants to do a dental implant. What is the downside to just having the tooth extracted and not having the implant. I can't afford an implant.

Hello.. Im a dentistry student.. I just wanted to share this to you.. My uncle is 79 years old and in feb he is going to be 80.m He was telling me to reffer him to a oral surgeon who does dental implants because he wants to have implants.n My uncle has 4 teeth left upper left central incisors, lower left first molar, lower, right canine, lower right central incisors... I brought him to one of my professors who has a clinic near school. she is a oral surgeon. she said in my uncle's age implants is not adviceable anymore but instead just dentures. My uncle has 4 teeth left but the dentist extracted it. Because it is useless already. you cant use 1 molar for eating. before the dentist will extract a tooth they will look for its function first. we waited for 1 month until my uncle's gums healed and he had his complete denture. =)

The downside to having the tooth extracted but not having a dental implant placed is that your bone in that area may start to deteriorate, which may also affect the adjacent teeth...meaning sometime down the line, you may lose those teeth as well! I'd suggest getting the implant!

It would be better to have tooth extracted but dental implant can be avoided if you can work with false teeth.
