Back pain symptoms may seem obvious. But do you know when symptoms of back pain are more serious or when to see a doctor? Learn what action to take & when...
After 5 months of this, I'm ready to cut my leg off. I went to my doctor 5 months ago (I have no insurance so everything is out of pocket) and told him of my leg pain that just came on suddenly one day and progressed to levels that brought me to tears.

He did basic checks, reflexes, etc, and pronounced it as a pinched sciatic nerve. He gave me a stretches sheet and put me on Ultram for the pain.

I followed this for three days and the Ultram didn't really even begin to cut or cover up the pain so I called him. He called in Vicuprofen, (Vicodin and Ibuprofen) and said come see him at my normal check up date in 3 months.

I've been doing the stretches every day, and calling in my refills weekly like he said, and one day I get a message back from my pharmacy saying that it has been denied. I go in and see him, just to find out he's not there and see another doctor.

He does the same tests, checks my files, and decides it's muscles/tendons. Gives me a different prescription for Vicodin Extra Strength, Muscle Relaxers, and Anti-Inflammatories. He says avoid the exercises because that's what's keeping it from getting better, and to come back in a month.

Fast Forward to the check up, and my doctor is dumbfounded. "It should've been better by now, this is really worrying me, let's get you and MRI, I know a place that will set up a payment plan." So we set it up and I deposit 300 dollars toward 1,100.00, and get the MRI.

It has been at his office a week. I was told that when he gets the results he would call me, so I patiently waited, until today (Friday) and I call. I talk to one of the girls at the front desk and they say they have them and read the results: Degenerative Discs L3, L4, L5. and say that she'll put it in his inbox and have him call me back.

I get a call an hour later and it's another one of the desk clerks. She says "His note says, "Patient...is...healed. Continue...with...exercises...".

I close my eyes as I hear this and tell her that my leg still hurts. It still wakes me up at random with pain ranging from mild to wanting to take a chainsaw to it. I told her that the previous person already read the MRI results to me and I repeated them back to her.

She said, "Well that's what it says here, he's standing right here, and that's what it says...", Which entirely makes no sense to me. I just say Ok, blindly, and hang up. I walk around and think and I call back, and he's supposed to call me after lunch and talk with me.

I'm really aggravated at his note. Even more so at their dismissive way of treating this. It may not be serious to them, but it's my body, my leg, and I'm in pain, and getting conflicting diagnosis, and then it seems like MRI results ignored?

I don't know if it's Sciatica, Muscles, or Tendons. The only things I know for sure are that I've got degenerative discs in L3-5, my right leg is presenting with variating levels of pain, and I feel like I'm being jerked around. I'm 28 years old and I really don't know what my next step should be.

hi
you really need someone more knowledgeable than a gp dr. you need a spine specialist. either ortho or neuro surgeon. they are the most knowledgeable. degenerative disc disease can be found in plenty of people. sometimes it can cause pain and with many people there is no pain. the surgeon may have you do some physical therapy. he may have you injected with steroids to reduce inflammation and pain. are you in a position to pay for this? how soon can you get insurance....pete
