I have had severe debilitating lower back pain going on 12 years now with no diagnosis. I have been to Dr after Dr and no one can find anything that should be causing my pain. I have been going to a Pain Management Dr. for around 9 years now and was given the duragesic patches which worked good enough for me to have some kind of normal life. Then I got this bright idea that I might get addicted and wanted off the patch and have a pain pump implanted. It was implanted in 2003 and my pain is unbearable. The only additional help my Dr. can give me is Loratab which is like taking an aspirin so I don't even have them filled anymore. On my last visit he prescribed 15mg morphine and i'll see if they work. I am wondering what other diseases there are that have severe lower back pain as a symptom. If I don't get relief soon so I can have some kind of normal life I am thinking very seriously about just ending it all. This is too long for a person to have this kind of pain. If our beloved pets are going to have a life of nothing but pain we euthanize them because we can't bare to see them in pain. Why should it be different for humans? If someone could just give me a few suggestions as to which way to go for some kind of diagnosis maybe I could at least walk to the mail box once in a while.

Hang in there, there is always something more to try. Are you willing to read some books? Have you tried Dr. John Sarno?

Even herniated or degenerated discs do not cause chronic pain. It's usually from muscles not working properly such as muscle imbalance or muscle tension.
Pills don't cure.

If not, have you tried massage? There are some who do core-distortion massage. Think of them like chiropractors of the muscles, not joints.

Just to get your back moving a little

" I am wondering what other diseases there are that have severe lower back pain as a symptom. "

Have you ever heard of TMS? It stands for Tension Myosis Syndrome and describes how how muscle tension can cause chronic pain. Dr. John Sarno has written a few books on the subject. There are no exercises, you just learn to relax the muscle tension.

Elaine Petrone has a "Miracle Ball" program where all you have to do is lie on 1 or 2 soft, air filled rubber balls. Again, no exercises. You just (1) feel the pressure of the balls on your tight muscles, (2) breath, and (3) relax.

I would write more but the moderators won't allow it.

Good Luck

Chronic muscle tension
You may want to consider taking a vitamin D test. Recent research has shown that chronic muscle tension can be caused by a vitamin D deficiency. See vitamindcouncil.org for more info. For me, the main symptoms were chronic tension in the neck, shoulders, back and hamstrings. After I started taking an ultra high (50,000 IU/week) dose of vitamin D the symptoms gradually went away over the course of a few weeks.
