Q: Debilitating headaches
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 12th, 2009
I have been getting these excruciatting painful headaches behind left eye for about 3 yrs now.
They only last for up to a min, then go away for a short time
I dont think they are "cluster" as they have no pattern about them
Like I said the pain is extremely servear.
It feels like the eye is going to burst
have had all the ordinary things dome like xrays , scans mri's etc
nothing awful was found to be causing the problem
ALl I know is it is totally debilitating when I get them

Headache and Migraines Answer A6037

The attacks you experience might be either of ocular origin or of neurological origin.
If the problem is in the eye, then constriction of some of the blood vessels which might be already narrowed due to atherosclerosis might be causing the condition. Examining the eye fundus (the retinal blood vessels) might confirm this diagnose.
If the problem is neurological, then you might be experiencing these symptoms because of a possible previous damage of the brain, especially the center for sight. The latter is less probable, but should be examined anyway. Electroencephalography (EEG) might be helpful to confirm or rule the possible preexisting damage to the brain.
