Q: daughter seems to vomit when she eats meat

My daughter seems to vomit whenever she eats meat. It started with only beef, but now it happens with poultry too. She always had a hard time with steak, her lips would puff up and her tongue would get swollen. Hamburger if not cooked through would do the same thing. That started several years ago. She is now 21 and recently can't eat any beef with out vomiting and now in the last 2 weeks chicken causes her to vomit also. Any ideas what may be causing all this??

Food allergy I think would be a reasonable guess...

I assume you or/and your daughter have seen a doctor about this? If not, I think it's time you did. Your doctor can request allergy tests to those certain foods to confirm a diagnosis. (or find the cause should the cause not be an allergy).

In the mean time, your daughter should avoid those foods since the reaction seems quite severe.

That is terrible, well hope you get her to the doctor and find out what is going on. Too bad that she gets sick eating meat. Sounds like she has a food allergy.

I agree with Victoria and Nightstar. It could be an allergy to any component of those foods. See a doctor as soon as possible...

It could be a problem with protein, do any of these symptoms occur after eating eggs, peanut butter or anything else high in protein?

She might really be allergic to some kinds of meat. My grandpa used to be allergic to chicken meat.

It sounds like she is probably allergic either to meet, or a chemical used in processing the meats. Have her go get tested for allergies at a doctors office. I'm a vegetarian ..she could always try that out, it isnt that bad.

sometimes things are not what they seem.
I can see why you would post this question here, it's a difficult situation that you obviously have some major concerns over. First of all, I THINK, that she should see a doc, the same as everyone else suggested.

Now here is the part that you might not want to hear. When a girl or woman has a huge secret she's been maintaining for a very long time, acting is one thing they are able to hone as long as the one thing they "think" they need isn't threatened by being discovered. In other words if she has been telling you for a long time that her tongue swells up and she has this major reaction you should stop and ask yourself if you've every actually seen this happen. If you've never had a first hand experience of the swelling and reaction then you should take her to a doctor to make sure you don't jump to any conclusions.

Now here comes the sticky part, if she's hiding bulimia and she knows that you are sympathetic to the fact that she has an alergic reaction every time she eats meat then that might be her "out."

It's a difficult head battle when it comes to eating disorders and the only thing I can provide is first hand experience with the disorer itself, but I am not a doctor. Get her checked out and if it's not an allergy, then the best thing is to discuss the possibilty of an eating disorder with your doc, and see what he/she says.

I wish I could help more, I hope all works out well.
