Q: Dark lump on tongue

Hi, I am a 31 yr old female, sporadic smoker (never heavy), and I don't drink alcohol on a regular basis. I recently noticed a darker area on the right hand side of my tongue, it is a purplish colour, and upon closer investigation found a lump associated with the colouring. I cannot feel the lump with my teeth or on the side of my mouth, only if I press down onto my tongue with thumb and forefinger. It feels a bit like there is a grain of rice in my tongue, I don't know how else to describe it! The discolouration is about 5mm across and slightly shorter in height.

I recently moved and haven't yet registered with a new doctor, but have now gone into panic mode. I can't get an appointment until the end of the week. I have read around and found some pictures that look just like my tongue - they had the same thing, only larger, and it was described as a vascular hamartoma. Is it likely to be something like this, based on my age etc, or should I be more worried?

Thanks in advance for any assistance

I'd still it get checked. Your PCP, dentist or ENT doctor should be able to help identify it.

Best Wishes,

Zig
