I am also having this issue, and have had the issue for quite awhile. However, this month it is particularly heavy and lingering. I've had the "brownmuck" for almost a week and a half now... it emerged only about 5 days after my period was over.

Very frustrating, it's never lasted this long or been this heavy. However, I've started training for a marathon, and am betting that the increase in activity could be the culprit. About 5 months ago I had a vaginal ultrasound because I was having painful periods (they were looking for fibroids). Nothing was out of the ordinary. I only have one partner, and all previous STD checks have come up negative.

When I was in highschool o would have extremely heavy periods... Soak a super tampon in an hour kind of heavy... And then mid cycle I'd have a week of thick brown discharge (I usually wore a tampon then too.)... Went to the dr several times and told them about it. They all said the heavy periods could be controlled with the pill and the dark brown discharge was normal (the body clearing out old blood, leftover from the previous period)... So I got on the pull in my mid 20s, after I was so anemic from the blood loss. The pill helped both the heavy flow and brown discharge. Got married when I was 26, switched pills bc of insurance and my periods were heavy again-but didnt get the brown again. At 30 we decided we'd try for a family so I went to a new doc to get a consultation before going off the pill... my new doc decided I looked pale so she did a blood test. Found out I am low thyroid (thus the heavy flow) so I'm on a supplement. Two months later I had pain mid cycle and pain during intercourse. Doc did an ultrasound and I have an ovarian cyst. Cysts are normal as long as they go away on their own, but as mine has been there now for a few months I am scheduled for a Laposcopy/hysteroscopy as they believe I could have endometriosis. I am pretty frustrated since I've gone to doctors soany times, told them all my mom had endometriosis AND thyroid issues and none of them did anything about it till now - when I'm trying to start a family. So there you go. The discharge is 'normal' but there could be other issues causing it. I dont know that any of you guys have anything to worry about - but thats my story. Maybe some of it is helpful.

I was diagnosed with adenomyosis one (1) year ago and have been on various kinds of treatments ever since. I have bled in between periods and cramping in the abdomen is not something new to me as it is part of the adenomyosis. This had definitely left a strain on my marriage as sex is always based on if I am spotting or not as it could be a turn off if I was! Three months ago I was advised by my gyne to start on birth control (yasmine) to try and maybe control the spotting and in hope after 6 months of being on the BC I would then try to conceive my second child. I have been taking my pills religiously, but this month I have skipped two pills so far and I noticed gluey brown thick discharge 10 days after my period that has been happening for the pass 6 days. I did not mention anything to my husband hoping that it would go away but the situation has worsened. I am having severe abdominal cramps (like I have never felt before) and now this is starting to worry me! I have decided to go and get myself checked tomorrow morning and I will most definitely come back with the answers that I get from my gyne...

I had exactly the same problem. I saw a specialist who confirmed it was nothing serious. She said it was a mixture if old blood and natural discharge. I underwent an exploratory op under general anaesthetic to confirm that there were no problems - at the same time the surgeon scraped away the older blood that she said had built up over years - since then the brown discharge has disappeared with no reoccurrence in the last 3 years. I have recently developed mid-cycle pain lasting up to 7 days. It ends when I ovulate. I've had another exploratory op to see if I had endometriosis but apparently I don't. It's seriously debilitating but my doctor and the surgeon seem to have lost interest now they can't pin an obvious label on it. Anyone experience anything similar?

I got my first period on August 23 of last year. It has been irregular, as my mom said it would be. I got my period again on April 11th or so and it lasted a good 9 or 10 days!! Now it's may and I've been noticing for the last couple days that what you described has been happening to me! I'm almost 14 and I'm scared to death. I got random pains in my pelvic area and stomach the other day. I hope it's nothing serious. I'm really scared, please tell me what's going on! By the way, I've never been to a gynocologist and I don't plan on it for a while! Thank you so much!

To xxcarrly,

If that is your first period that is completely normal. It takes a few years for your period to become regular sometimes. That is the same thing that happened when I first got my period (over 10 years ago). Mine was like that, lasted longer because I only got it a few times a year. You have nothing to worry about!!

Brown spotting/discharge between periods
Ok ladies! The discharge is just a normal monthly discharge that we all get around the time of ovulation. The brown that you all see is just some old blood. The causes of the old blood may vary. Endometriosis, cysts, hormone imbalances, cancer, to name a few. Hope this helps

Hi folks

I've been getting a very small amount of very dark brown discharge mid-cycle for 2 years. At first I thought I was having an extra mini-period or something! No pain or anything, just the discharge. It comes between day 12 and day 18 of the cycle on usually 1 to 4 days. For the record, I've never been on the pill or pregnant, under 10 sexual partners.

I was afraid to ask the doctor so I tried taking evening primrose oil, and that actually seemed to clear it up, but if I stop taking it, the dark discharge returns.

I finally plucked up the courage to see the doc. She said that my recent clear smear result and the fact that EPO made it clear up were both good signs.

I had swabs taken to confirm no infection- nothing found and no obvious problems down there spotted. I haven't been called back for any other tests so I guess they're not worried about it...

bleeding between periods
If anyone comes across this forum again like I did, I want to pass on some information that i came across. I say my OB/GYN for an annual exam, I was given a clean bill of health. Two weeks later I had my normal period at my normal time. I am not taking any contraceptive.(Birth control) I began "spotting" after my period and it lasted for 6 weeks. It started out red and began to become an blackish/brown muscus discharge. I got a urine test and blood test done at my normal doctors, I am not pregnant and my blood work was completely normal. I went to my OB/GYN and found that i have grown a polyp. In 8 weeks(2 mos) I had developed and grown a polyp that was not visible before hand. Schedule an appointment with an OB/GYN. Here is some information on Polyps.

Hi again- follow up: I brought it up again with the doctor and they sent me for an ultrasound scan. Result: very small fibroid in the womb. Doesn't seem too much to worry about.

So go get your ultrasound! If you're slim and don't need the internal ultrasound, this is totally pain free- just like the feel of an underarm deodorant rolling on your abdomen. (I didn't have the internal one so I don't know how that is.)

The internal one doesn't hurt a bit unless you are a virgin then it's a smidge uncomfy. I had it both ways and it isn't too bad.

HelpingOthers
Glad to hear other ladies have the same thing. I've never been on BC and have only had one partner ever (married highschool boyfriend). In January of 2012 I started working out regularly and taking a multi vitamin and fish oil supplement.this was when I noticed my first midcycle discharge as described by everyone. I regularly worked out for a few months then slacked off when personal trainer sessions stopped. Now in Oct 2012 I started running again and take the vitamin/fish oil again, and I'm getting the discharge again. Based on the comments here, my situation could be caused by an increase in activity and a change in routine. Just thought I'd share this experience.

Hello - I noticed this brown mucky discharge after I completed a half marathon on sunday. I am mid-cycle, have not had any sexual activity for almost 3 months now and since last having sex have had 2 fairly normal periods.

I have also started on some antibiotics for an infection and recently increased the amount of vitamins I am taking also including a fish oil and multivit supplement like you. I think my experiences seem in line with yours!

Reassuring but will get a check done anyhow. Thanks for your post.

I recently have been experiencing the same thing. I ended my period 11 days ago and had sex for the first time 7 days ago. Now I am finding a very small amount of dark brown discarge. It is very small in amount but still bothers me. I have had no symptoms of an infection or any other abnormality in my body. I am currently on birth control and have been for almost a year. I'm just hoping that my hormones are out of Wack from many factors like the fact that I had sex for the first time and am under a lot of stress. Does anyone know what is happening?

Change of routine and wild amino acid theory
I think the change of routine theory could work for me. I am expecting my slightly irregular period in a week, have had this discharge since 3 days now. Started light and brown, now thick and black/ red. This is after a week of abnormal physical activity, stress and diet change (increase in carb and animal protein and intake). I'm not haing sex or am i on birthcontrol...anbody know whether some bodies can be sensitve to large amounts of amino acids? Can that mess up your hormones or something? (Sorry, i'm prone to inventing wild, uninformed theories)

"Being stressed is also one of the reasons for experiencing brownish vaginal discharge. The hormonal levels in the body may be altered due to extreme stress. Sudden changes in body weight can also result in brown spotting between the menstrual cycle. Women who are on a new exercise regimen, may experience vaginal spotting due to a change in the physical activity. However, there is no need to panic as this is natural and may go away once the body adjusts itself to the new regimen."

Thought I'd share this w/ everyone. I have increased the amount of days and the amount of time I spend at the gym. I am currently going through the same thing. I am not on birth control pills and I am not sexually active (not that I don't want to be). It's nothing to worry about. However, you should consult a doctor if it continues and/or you feel any pain.

Brownish bleeding, went to doctor.
Went to doctor about the same issue. Checked pap. Hormone std and were all normal. Doctor told me to monitor and I may need birth control pills. I,m going to another doctor tomorrow for a second opinion. It bothers me a lot, last month I had this brownish bleeding for 10 days.

Hi everyone. Just had to add my experience with this dark brown discharge issues. I just had my daughter this pass April. I have been having my periods like clockwork every month on the 17th. It's only the 14th today, but I am worried I might not get my period. Been experiencing this dark brown discharge with slight red blood. Worried what this could be. I use panty liners everyday and when I get this discharge, it fills up the whole panty liner. When I use the restroom and wipe, I see the blood and discharge. What can this possibly be? (Sorry if this was too graphic)!!!
