I have suffered from migraines for over 23 years. I was originally prescribed Inderal daily which I still take today but at higher doses due to also being diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse at 21. I take MAXALT MLT when I get a migraine (could not tolerate Imitrex, mae me sicker than a dog!!) but since you only get 9 pills at a time, I tend to be very stingy with them, meaning I will not take them until my migraine is at its worst. (They are expensive) Are there any medications out there you can take on a daily basis to prevent migraines. I have heard people taking topamax and I took it once and got hives. Is there any other medication out there? I have gone from having a migraine once a month to having them 3 times a week and I also have daily headaches. I can't tell you how much ibuprofen I go through! I am so desperate to get rid of these pains. I just feel like I want someone to kick me in the head!

I've had migraines (almost constantly) for years also and tried a lot. Imitrex also makes me sick. Fortunately I can take Topamax, but it doesn't help much unless I take enough to put me to sleep all the time. I've been told to try Botox but haven't yet due to it being out of my price range. The one thing I found that does work wonders is Trigger Point Injections. With my insurance, the injections are cost effective. I definitely recommend trying them, just bring someone to drive you home after and plan on a couple hours to deal with the initial pain. For me it's worth the initial pain.

Trigger Point Injections
What exactly are trigger point injections and do you go to your regular family doctor to get them? How long do they work for? Are they only for when you have one or to prevent them?

migraine prevention
I had suffered migraines and it seems to run in my family, as well as my kids. I would get several a week. Anyway, my doctor recentently prescribed me atenolol...a low dose. I thought she was crazy since this medication is typically used for hypertension. So I asked several medical professionals I knew about this since I was so very concerned since I have very low blood pressure to begin with. I was told by all that it is used for migraines and should have no ill effects on my low blood pressure. I have been using it for over a month now and yet to have a migraine.

i had migraine headaches for over 10 years. i would lie down in a fetal postion, lights hurt my eyes, i cant move, it was torture to even go to the bathroom. i used to get them twice a week. i wouldnt be able to cook dinner for my family. i had to lay down and it would hurt so bad i would pray to God to kill or heal me. it wouldnt go away until the next morning.
the doctor gave me imetrex, and i also took asprin.
at one time in my life i lost my job, and i wasnt in a relationship, and my life long headaches went a way. so mines was strickly stress related.
chinese believe that westeren medicine cover up and not treat medical problems. which i agree, that's why i started to reseach herbal remedies, and chinese medicine.
