Hi all,

Got an ongoing problem and the local gp doesn't seem to have any idea, hoping to go into town next week to see someone else but until then has anyone any thoughts?

I'm a 28 year male, 20 stone, 6'7'', 42 inch waist so slightly overweight but its never given me a problem. Usually I'm out and about during the day so light activity.

Over the past few months I've been getting daily headaches of various degrees - ranging from a slight dull pain to full blown migraines (by that I mean I can't stand any light, dizzy, nauseas and extreme pain - normally have to lie down in a dark room and take a good number of pink/yellow migraleve)

In conjunction with the headaches I've felt pretty run down, weak and light headed. Something if I turn round to fast I feel dizzy and have to sit down. My appetite has decreased as well.

This all started after a change in my diet - I used to eat a large amount of chocolate and fizzy drink each day. But my weight increased quickly, 3 stone in 1 and half years, so I knocked them on the head - now I hardly have any. Although I have noticed that I have various degrees of success in short term treating the problem with doses of chocolate or sweet ham / tea with sugar in..... I'm now wondering if there’s any chance I might be diabetic?

Would it fit in with the other symptoms? I did check myself with a boots kit and I was always between 5.5 and 6.8, even after not eating for a good few hours I was still only down to 5.5...

is it possible that my body is used to higher levels of sugar? Up till the time this all started I used to drink coke and eat chocolate every day and apart from the weight increase I felt healthy. Now i feel weak and tired (having a 30 min nap nowdays in the afternoon - that’s just not right for a 28 year old)

any thoughts would be appreciated..

thanks

Richard

hi and welcome to the community,

first of all, congratulations on having cut down the sugars! it takes alot of self control to be able to do that.

from all of the things you mentioned your symptoms sound a lot like short term opiate withdrawal. the medication you are using to treat your symptoms contains codeine - a low level opiate, which can create a physical dependence with long term use.

this would explain most of your symptoms - particularly the headaches, increased sensitivity to light, decreased appetite, low level of energy, and weight loss.

Other symptoms of opiate withdrawal are:

severe fatigue, lack of motivation, moderate to severe and crushing depression, feelings of panic, sensations in the legs (and occasionally arms) causing kicking movements which disrupt sleep, increased heartrate and blood pressure, chills, gooseflesh, headaches, anorexia (lack of appetite), mild or moderate tremors, and other adrenergic symptoms, severe aches and pains in muscles and perceivably bones, and weight loss in severe withdrawal.

how long have you been taking migraleve?

do you take any other medication?

what is the longest time period that you have gone without using this or other medications?

Hi all,

thanks to everyone that gave a reply. Turns out nothing was wrong with me (yet)

We had some friends over and they all complianed of headaches within a few hours - turns out we have a leak on oil central heating system, the fumes were causing me to feel light headed and casing the headaches. Had it repaired and been troubl free for 2 days now.

thanks again everyone nice to know I haven't got diabetes, although I guess I need to lose the weight quickly otherwise I might be back in a few months.

cheers

Richard
