Q: dachshunds and babies

My boyfriend and I have a 1 1/2 year old long haired dachshund and he tends to nip at people. Well me and my boyfriend just found out I'm pregnant so now I'm wondering what the dog is going to be like with the baby. I've heard many things about dachshunds with babys and a lot seem to be more negative then positive. Can you guys possibly tell me if you know of any dachshunds that either did good or not so good with a baby?

Congrats on the pregnancy...

I can't answer the question whether your dog will do well around a baby.

We have a Jack Russell which I am in the middle of training not to nip and I found this technique to be working....when she nips I poke her and say no (use your word). She seems to be catching on. Nips have definately decreased.

If this does not work for you two then maybe a trip to obedience school might be in order.

If you watch a mother dog with her pups she will nip at them to keep them in line...so my poke (not hard) works thus far. Ah...maybe that is what my JT is trying to do to me...keep me in line Smile However I'm the bigger dog in this house!

Congrats on your baby!

I have a rottweiler/sheltie puppy and whenever he nips at me, I withdraw my hand and say "NO" I wait a few seconds before I pet him again. This way he knows that he doesn't get attention from me when he nips. He has gotten a lot better with it. Good luck!
