Cytotec is a brand name of a medicine containing misoprostol. Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog. Its application is contraindicated in pregnant women because it can cause abortions and fetal defects. The fetal defects are far more frequent if the medication is administered in the first trimester. However, fetal defects can occur if misoprostol is administered in the other trimesters, too. Given the age of the fetus, an abortion induced by a drug can be life-threatening for the mother. The fetus is already very big and it can not be removed from the womb without help from a gynecologist. If the mother tries to remove the fetus by herself, then there is a possibility that parts of the fetus or the placenta remain in the uterus and cause lethal bleeding or infection.

In the 4th month of the pregnancy it is highly advisable that the fetus is removed from the mother by a gynecologist only.
