Q: cyst or angiomyolipoma

This is my first post here. A month ago I went for my regular yearly check up and on the kidney ultrasound the radiologist technician found what she thought was likely a hypertrophy of the kidney. I went to see my GP and he recommended a CT. After that exam, a different radiologist concluded that it was likely a angiomyolipoma, that there was something on my kidney. My GP referred me to a nephrologist, who really didn“t add much other than to say that it was very likely benign and referred me to a urologist. The urologist sent me to another radiologist for another ultrasound. This radiologist concluded that it was a cyst and that he would discuss it with the CT radiologist to try to reach a conclusion.

They spoke and now the last radiologist wants another ultrasound. Apparently they did not reach a definite diagnosis. This last doctor again said that he thought it was a cyst but wanted more tests to be sure.

I am extremely worried. How is it possible that three different tests reach three different conclusions (hypertrophy, angiomyolipoma and cyst)? Can these be misdiagnosed? If so, what are the chances of it being something more dangerous? Thanks for the help!

Hi and Welcome

I have been doing some reading up on angiomyolipoma, from what I've read it is mostly benign but do need to be treated with further testing such as MRI, possible renal biopsy, lasix renal scan. Did any of the doctors mentions tuberous sclerosis?

It is very possible they misdiagnosed you. You need to keep pushing to get to the bottom of this, even if you have to see 5 different urologist.
If it's a renal cyst chances are it will pop on it's own. but if it is a cyst, again they need to find out why you are getting them and the chances of getting more. There's a condition known as polycystic kidney disease, I'm not saying you have this. I'm just going on the information you provided and looked up some of the possibilities it can be.

I can understand your worries. I myself have a kidney disease along with other problems with my kidneys. I've had all the tests possible that deal with kidneys.

Did the doctors check your kidney function (GFR) with a blood test? Have they done any 24 hour urine cultures on you?

Please keep pushing for an answer. I was told over 30 years ago my kidney disease which they said would never develop into anything, boy were they wrong. I've had a few operations and have scarring in my kidneys all the down to my urethra.
We are here to help you through this. Please keep us posted and pm me anytime you'd like. If I can answer your questions I will if not I'll do some research to get an answer if I can.

Hang in there..Smile

Do you have a history of kidney problems? I was just wondering when you wrote that you were having your yearly check up. Try not to worry. I know it's easier said than done. Good luck with your tests. You can pm me as well, I will try and answer any questions you have if I can. I, too, have kidney disease and have had some experiences with tests, stents, etc.
