injuredFinger,
Fingertip avulsions (<1cm in diameter), which do not have any bone exposed, are usually treated with cleaning of the wound to healthy tissue using hydrogen peroxide. The wound is covered with Xeroform gauze, and then the finger is placed in a Tubex dressing. The dressing is usually changed every 3 to 4 days, or as needed.
This way the wound will epithelialize on its own. As the skin grows back over the wound, the sensory nerves also grow back in. This treatment usually produces the best cosmetic appearance and sensation.
It usually takes about 4 weeks for a 1cm diameter wound to heal.
