Q: Could this be TMJ?

I just heard about this disorder and can immediately relate to the symptoms. For the past 2 months I have been stuck in my house with severe headaches ones that will sometimes progress into migraines but mostly how they were described by having tmj. It all kind of makes sense I would just like some input. I am 20 yrs old and overall healthy and active. I have had many dental problems in the past such as 2 root canals, braces accompanied with the head gear for 5 years. I also had to have a fake tooth removed and the gap was then closed with braces. Fast Forward to about senior year in high school, I got in a bad snowboarding accident where I don't really remember if I hit the side of my heaed or the side of my face, but regardless there was damage to the jaw. However I did nothing about this, toughed out the next year and a half and the pain slowly faded. Then this year playing D1 lacrosse I can recall 2 incidinces where I was struck in the jaw and felt a pop and then could not move my jaw for about an hour or two. I thought nothing of it people get in fights all the time, so I figured I was okay. But now I think that this has come back to haunt me. Ive been having really bad headaches when I get up and move around alot. It seems that alot of neck movement and altered positions spur my headaches. I have been having problems with headaches and ringing in my ear and weird jaw noises not pops(kinda like squishing) for a while probably since the snowboarding accident .Ive felt like my throat has been put under pressure at times my teeth have hurt occasioanlly, also the worst part is the sensitivity to light at times it freaks me out. Its tough to focus my eyes and it feels like im using the back of my head constantly to focus my eyes. Ive pretty much been lying down the past month in my bed and occassionally walk around just to try and keep some muscle. I've lost 10 lbs. Been to the ER twice the only tests ive had done so far is a CT of my brain and sinuses and they checked out to be fine. I thought they could be attributed to anxiety but I was put on klonopin and still am getting the headaches. I'm also wondering if my impacted wisdom teeth which I was supposed to have removed in december, but didn't due to a bad cold I had, could be causing these. Any peices of advice would be greatly appreciated. This has been causing me great anxiety and would love to hear any words of wisdom. God Bless. Thanks.

OMG, they had the CT of the head, and they did not comment anything about the TMJ. I would demand the CT results - actual CD disk with data and review it myself, you would be able to see your TMJs in their after some practice if you want to get to the bottom of this. ER mostly check for something big and serious, internal head bleeding, big tumor. So small changes such as slightly damaged condyle of the the TMJ is not impossible, especially the sounds you have - sounds like fluid in the joint? How about cracking, popping, more like cartilage kinda noises as if it was being torn (which is not) but that's what it feels like when I open my mouth most of the time. Even moving the neck, head position change, triggers popping, as if some bone was out of place. Doctors sucks, they put you on klonopin, well good thing that it does help with facial pain, but unerlying condition - few one to touch it...
So it looks like it's going to be a journey, especially if doctors have noted you to be anxious - who knows, they might just write down - hypochondriac and tap you on the shoulder; so don't express your anxiety or worries, but tell the doctors exactly how this condition is impacting your life, your ability to study, socialize, eat food... and be repetitive and annoying, maybe they will be nice and prescribe an MRI of the TMJs which I think is necessary to determine what's happening there.

May God help as all,

Ed

You obviously had several injuries to your head that have caused some kind of trauma. It's amazing to me that doctors do not asked you immediately if you have suffered some kind of injury to your head and neck. You could have sustained a fracture to your hyoid bone, styloid process, thyroid cartiledge, or any combination of fractures. I know from experience that many of these injuries may not even show up in CT scans, MRIs or X rays. Just know that you are not crazy, there is obviously something physically wrong with you. Your symptoms are happening because of your various injuries that were left untreated. Do not give up.
