Could I possibly have lymphedema?

My right leg is larger than my left one. After all the doctors and reading I have done, I am so frustrated because I still don't know why or how it can be treated or even if it can be treated. I have suffered with this for at least 20 years and the older I get, the worse it gets. It is very frustrating because it gets worse when I am menstrating. On top of the pains and aches of that, my leg gets so painful and swollen, I can't even put certain pants on. It is quite embarassing and very noticible because I am a small framed women. I can literally gain 5-7 pounds a day when it gets swollen. I drink plenty of water and urinate so I know I am not retaining it. I have also recently wondered if my hip has anything to do with this or is another issue making it worse. For many years, my hip, on the same side of my body, pops very loudly when I lift my leg to the side. I am a very active person, so it does bother me. The day after I execise, if my hip was used like this, it hurts and stays sore. I can almost deal with the hip pain better than I can the swelling of my leg. What kind of doctor should I see and what are your thoughts?

Hello, and thank you for your medical question on e Health Forum.

The cause of your symptoms could be hormonal issues.

Excess of adrenal hormones, or estrogen secretion could be the cause of the (probable) water retention.

Hypothyroidism can also present in similar ways.

You might consult a endocrinologist for proper evaluation of your condition.

I hope this helps.
