Q: Could I have Melanoma?
asked by: Maigen on July 11th, 2009

Late Thursday night I found a small dis-colored mark on my right hip. This is the first time I have noticed it, which worries me.
It is not raised and it does not look like a bite, it is just different colors of browns and tans. I have looked pictures of Melanoma up on the internet and it does look like some of the pictures but they usually say it should feel scaby or something like that, this just looks different. When I rub my finger over it the mark hurts and the skin feels slightly raw.
If anyone has any knoweldge about this it would be amazingly helpful. I do not usually talk to people about stuff as I don't want to worry or burden anyone. Any help or support would be greatly appreciated.
Could it be Melanoma?
I will be booking an appointment very soon to see my doctor.
I am 18 and am feeling quite alone. Please help.

At your age it is unlikely that it is Melanoma, but I'm glad you are going to the doctor, just to be safe. Anytime you see something odd, you should get it checked out. Unless the doctor can tell right away that it is nothing, he will probably cut it off to be safe and send it to a lab. They will see what it is (if anything) and the doctor will then decide whether he got it all or whether there might be more that needs to be taken off.

The good news is that your spot doesn't really fit the description for Melanoma and even if it is something, you are having it looked at early. Just go to the doctor and try not to worry too much until he looks a it.

Hi Maigen: I wouldn't worry about it, but do have it checked out...Unfortunately, melanoma will grow on any part of your body...Our son had one of his on his stomach..About four stitches to close that one...They have no known path or place to occur...2% of them will be found in a woman's vulva...They spread from other parts of the body...I have a complete check up by a Dermatologist's assistant every three years...I am checked from head to toe...The first time I was surprised that they checked my vagina and anus area as close as they did...Now I find that they were wise doing this...Everyone should...Our one son has had it and the other son is watched closely...These words are important to all people...Hopefully they will reach someone who is not as careful as they should be...Again good luck...You are a very wise young woman...

Take care,
Caroline
