Q: coughing up phlegm

hi i was wondering if you could give me some advice i am 38 smoker for 20 years, for the past week i have been having a dull pain in my left leg, then on Wednesday while at work i had a really bad pain in my back just at the bottom of my rib cage, apart from that i was feeling fine.
then yesterday i was doing my shopping when i felt faint and sick with a huge headache checked my pulse which was 48 bpm which is low, after feeling ill allday i got up this morning and coughed up phlegm with blood in it and my leg and chest and back are hurting me and then again at 11.30 blood in it and still feel unwell.not short of breath no cold or stuffy nose any ideas many thanks in advance..

It is, of course, impossible to provide you with a specific diagnosis over the Internet. I am concerned, however, that you could possibly have a blood clot in the veins of your left leg (deep venous thrombosis). When this condition occurs, sometimes these blood clots can break off and travel to the lungs (pulmonary embolism). In severe cases, pulmonary embolism can lead to decreased blood pressure, blood-tinged sputum, difficulty breathing, and chest pain. In very severe cases, pulmonary embolism can be a fatal disease. Secondly, coughing up bloody phlegm is always a cause for concern regarding, in addition to pulmonary embolism and respiratory infections, the possibility of lung cancer, especially in smokers.

You should immediately see your physician! If he/she is not available, then you should go to the emergency room.
