Q: Coughing fits and laryngeal spasms
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 18th, 2008
I would like to know if you have any thoughts regarding causes. Two of my sisters have the same type of symptoms, just a little less often as far as fits go. I'm hoping someone has seen this somewhere and can give me some avenues to look into. The local docs have simply said I would have to live with it, because they have no answers. Thanks.

Your sudden coughing fits could be due to a laryngeal spasm or asthma.

Laryngeal spasms could be provoked by an allergy, foreign body, infection, etc. A laryngoscopy can help if the problem is located in the larynx.

Lung functional tests and lung provocation tests can help to confirm or exclude asthma.

You may want to consult a pulmonologist and ENT-specialist about your condition.
