Q: Coping with TMJ

Hello, my name is Gayle and I am 19 years old. It wasn't that long ago after I was diagnosed with IBS that I started experiencing immense ear pain. I went to see a doctor at the clinic for the ear pain, they said that it was ear wax build-up and they cleaned out the ear wax. But the pain never went away, so I sent back in and they said that it was an ear infection and gave me amoxicillian - it seemed to make the pain even worse. Instead of going back in and trying to figure out what it is with a doctor I went on WEBMD.com and looked up ear pain. That was when I found information on TMJ. I realized that I had the symptoms - when I went in for my flu shot I talked to a nurse to see what she thought about it, and she agreed with me and told me to talk to my dentist. Which was convenient, because I had an appointment with my denstist later that week for fillings. So I talked to my dentist and he asked me some questions and then he scheduled me an appointment for a mold for the night guard. I will admit, the night guard helps - but for me it is uncomfortable. It wasn't until recently that I started experiencing more and more pain. The headaches are the worst: The area of the pain for the headaches are the temples, sides of the head, back of the head, and top of the head. Sometimes it feels like the pain is everywhere. Along with the headaches comes the dizziness and nausea - which sucks. I also have the ear pain, neck pain, little eye pain, joint discomfort, etc. I have tried pain relievers and they just don't work that well - anybody got any advice to help with this? I am trying to understand the symptoms and the pain more and what I can do that would help me cope with the TMJ a lot better. If you have any advice - all advice will be appreciated!

Sounds like the only thing that has helped is the night guard. Is it a hard acrylic night guard designed specifically to reduce your nighttime clenching? If not, it won't do that much good.
