Q: Coping with disc bulges
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 22nd, 2009
Physical theropy has been going on for the back issue with constantly increasing weight being added, and longer times of strenuos activity, since beginning of August. I am still awaiting ESI which my doctor has recomended, I keep increacing my meds and the time each day I spend on heat and ice as the levels of theropy increase. Is there a possillity that more damage is being done over the six and a half months of theropy, with out the, what I consider proper treatment treatment of the injury, the epidural steroid injetion, that I am told should releive the swelling and get rid of the pain? Thank you Bob

Your question is whether your therapy may be causing more damage to your back.

With disc bulges, particularly as many as you have, risk of aggravation is always high. Proper exercise selection is essential, and many disc pain sufferers cannot perform any standing movements with weights for 3-4 months, depending on the severity of the case.

It is difficult to assess this situation without knowing exactly what you are doing.
