Q: Coping with Bipolar Disorder
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 25th, 2008
I just recently entered into a relationship with guy who has Bipolar Disorder Type-I. It is a long distance relationship, since we met online through a dating site. Recently he was hospitalized for more than 2 weeks due to sleeping disorder and hyperactivity. According to his mom, I am responsible for these unfavorable changes. I think she blames me. Although the guy still seems deeply in love with me, I am confused how to proceed. I like him a lot, but dont really understand the ramifications of having a relationship with BPD individual. Any help and guidance and what I should watch out for would be helpful. Please reply as soon as possible.

Bipolar Disorder Answer A4760
Current medical status: The guy am dating has been diagonsed with Bipolar Disorder Type-I

Current medical treatment: I dont know the medications

Bipolar disorder is a severe psychotic disease that is genetically conditioned. There is nothing you can do to help your boyfriend. He needs professional help from a mental health professional. I am afraid that his parents will often blame you for any worsening of his mental condition although you can't be guilty at all.

No matter how selfish this sounds, It seems that the best you can do for your future is to break the relationship with him.
