Q: Contracting the flu
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 30th, 2009
I took my son(9)and daughter(12) to the er. ER tested my son and he has the flu and my daughterwasn't tested butthey said she has uri. They gave him tamiflu because he has asthma and temp was over 103. They told me to give my daughter over the counter meds. Now she has been running a mild fever(101) but its symtoms like he had in the beginning. Do I need take her back to the ER or is it something more that I can do at home.

Cold, Flu and Viral Infections Answer A7455
Given the data you provided (your son has flu, and your daughter start having the same symptoms) it seems likely that your daughter might be experiencing the flu. Flu is highly contagious infective disease and transmission through the air among siblings is common.

The symptoms related to flu are: chills, fever, muscle pain, and general discomfort. A sore throat, coughing, and headache might also be present. '

Children might also experience gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. Resting and taking plenty of fluids is the only recommended treatment for the flu. Avoid giving aspirin to your children as it can cause Reye’s syndrome.

Since antibiotics cannot treat viral infections, it would be a good idea that you take your daughter to the ER in order to check whether it is a bacterial or viral infection. If no bacteria are detected, then the doctor might recommend anti-viral drugs as for your son.
