Q: contraceptive

I am on birth control, but have been advised by my doctor to not rely only on this.

I had sex today without a condom and my bf did not come, but I am just a bit worried that he could have ejaculated slightly without knowing. My period is due 15th April.

Is my doctors advice that birth control is a bit like Russian Roulette correct. I have not forgotten to take any of the pills, but I can only remember a 4 hour delay in taking it.
