Q: Contraception - induced hormonal imbalances
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 17th, 2009
I was taken off birth control pills in the middle of the cycle in November 08 due to blood clots in lungs from taking so long. I had been on birth control for about 23 years with the exception of the 14 months I was trying to get pregnant and had my daughter. I had Paragard put in on Dec 24th last year and had a short period from 12/19-12/24, then on 1/9-118 and then 2-9-2/18 but I ahven't started yet for March. Ive had cramps but no bleeding.

What is wrong with me

As you mentioned, you have irregular menstrual cycles. Given the fact that you stopped taking birth control pills (probably containing hormones) a while ago, your body might still be adjusting to the new situation, thus causing you to experience a hormonal imbalance. You might want to check your hormones and consult with your gynecologist. In most cases, you might need to wait for several more cycles to wait for your hormones to return to the normal monthly period fluctuation.
