Q: Continuous bleeding after using birth control products
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 2nd, 2009
I am having a cycle that is lasting over two weeks. I was on Depo for two years and have been off of the Depo for over a year now. I contacted my doctor expressing that my husband and I are wanting to conceive a third child. One year later, the doctor gave me a dosage of Progesterone 10mg a day for one week. Once I did not receive my cycle, she put me on a low dose birth control for two months. All lab work came back within normal limits. Now that ALL test, exams, and medication have been done, I am having this continuous bleeding for over two weeks. It started off dark then it lightens up. On the second week, it was a repeat of the first week. How long will this last and what should I do next if the doctor can’t find anything wrong?

The continuous bleeding is due to the recovery from the birth control products. In many cases, the inner lining of the uterus thickens, thus leading to heavy and prolonged bleeding when the first menstruation occurs. The color is just as expected. It should not happen more than several times. You might want to schedule a check-up with a gynecologist if the bleeding repeats for more than 3 times or if it is very heavy.
