Paragard bleeding
I have had a Paragard now for over 2 years. The first year or so was fantastic - I thought I'd finally found the perfect birth control method. Over the last year, however, my periods have gradually been getting longer and longer. Normally about 5 days or so, they started stretching to 7, 9, 11, and I am currently on my third week of non-stop bleeding and have scheduled an appt with my ob/gyn for next week to have everything checked out. She said she'll do a sonogram to ensure that everything's in the right place, but also didn't sound surprised when I told her how long I'd been bleeding. After googling it a bit, it seems to be a somewhat common issue. I am torn because I really think it's ridiculous for me to have to pay for and take birth conrol pills to regulate my periods when I already have an IUD. However, I don't really want to have it removed and go back to the pill because I just don't like the side effects that go along with most pills and don't want to freak out every time I forget to take a pill (which definitely will happen from time to time).

So I know that doesn't help your situation, but that's what I'm dealing with on my end.

In the same boat
I am experiencing the same thing now ( bleeding for two week straight) and I have have my Paragard for over a year now. I have an GYN appt this week. How did your situation turn out? Do you still have the IUD?

The same thing is happening to me. My doctor has put me on two different BC pills to regulate bleeding. Like, changing the brand to a more expensive brand would help. My bleeding isn't as heavy but it's still continuous. Not to mention, when I stop bleeding, it's only for a couple of days. My husband and I haven't done anything for over a month now because of it. And I haven't felt like it because of the pain. I'm calling my doctor in the morning to get this thing taken out.

Hello. I can not take normal BC as well. I had the ParaGard IUD inserted in 2008. My body bled heavy for about a month or so. 1st time I had intercourse, I was literally numb inside afterwards. My body eventually adjusted, and periods were lighter after 1 year or so. I am now going to be 46. Over the past year or so, my periods were normal, but no clotting, no heavy (clotty) days, and yet periods were lasting 8-9 days and then spotting in middle of month. Numerous BV Infections inbetween. This past March, started lightly bleeding, around (Mar. 31st- April 1st), been everyday bleeding since.. light, think it's going to end, then it's there in morning or middle of night. Not eating as heavy, but on certain days, flow! Not hemmorrhage though. Continual. Had IUD removed, put on Provera for 7 days this past week. No stopping bleeding.. continues as usual even with it not there. First time in 7 years I've had some type of flow everyday, whether light or a little heavier. At wits end with this all. Depressed, allergy season and just picked up Iron pill. Sad

Paragard bleeding
What they have finally done is put me on the pill for three months to see if they can regulate the bleeding. Which sucks because I am like you, I chose to get an IUD because I hate the side effects of the pill. I will see if this works. If not, I suppose I will have to have this thing removed. Then I do not know what, other than getting a tubal!

Paragard
I had Paragard inserted 6 weeks after my baby was born. I've been bleeding ever since, 4 months now! I've had two trans vaginal ultra sounds the IUD is in the right place. The Dr. put me on Yaz, birth control for a month to regulate my bleeding. It stopped the bleeding for the first week but now I am bleeding again, and have been the past 3 weeks. On top of it all I am still breast feeding, my milk is drying up and my baby is not gaining weight. I have to put her on formula. I have no Idea what to do. I am so sick of bleeding! And very upset about my milk supply. Does anyone have a similar story??

Also Frustrated
Yes, I had my paraguard IUD put in at my 6-wk PP appt and that was 6 weeks ago!!! I am also extremely frustrated with the bleeding because I have been bleeding since my baby was born. It is sexually frustrating to not be able to have sex because of this constant bleeding. I am also breast feeding. I have a feeling your milk supply dried up because of the Yaz. Just a thought. I am sorry for your frustration but know that you're not alone!

Yes, my husband is very frustrated, and started suggesting some other crazy way of having sex which I cannot accept. I am so so sick of the bleeding, yet I can't afford to have more babies.

I got my ParaGard put in during March of 2009 and I am STILL bleeding. I've been checked out and the IUD is still in place and I don't have any uterine tenderness or anything like that.. the only crazy thing is the nonstop bleeding! Honestly that's the only downside I've had with this thing but spending so much money on pads and tampons (not to mention the crime scene sex) is starting to really get on my nerves.

Anybody found a way to fix this yet?

ParaGard continued bleeding
I finally stopped bleeding after about 5 months! The Dr. said he thought my estrogen level was low so I just wasn't healing from the child birth (six weeks prior to insertion)or the trauma of the ParaGard being inserted. He left the IUD in place and put me on oral birth control to regulate my hormones. I bled almost the whole month I was on Yaz, oral birth control but stopped finally the last week of my one month treatment. I am now about 7 months out and I am having normal periods now, just with some intense cramping and heavy, longer lasting bleeding. I would try an oral birth control for a month or two, my Dr. just gave me a sample pack from his office. Good Luck!

My pargard was put in some time in May 2009. My period didn't start until August 09 due to breastfeeding. The first 3 months of my period with Paragard were really great. My period was definitely heavier for the first couple days but the rest of the period was fine and the rest of my cycle was really normal. Last month things have gotten strange. I have my period..things seem ok...the period stops...then a few days later...i start bleeding again. I've had slight spotting before..but this seems stranger to me. Not to be gross..but sometimes it is like period blood and sometimes the discharge is this thick brown stuff...like at the end of a period. I've had 2 cycles like this now.
So...After seeing what everyone is saying here, I guess this is normal? I'm seeing my doc next month. I'm going to talk about it with him. but I think I'll have it removed.

Re: Continual bleeding with Paragard IUD
WARNING: WHAT I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT MY PARAGARD EXPERIENCE IS PRETTY GRAPHIC AND GROSS... IF YOU EASILY GROSSED OUT I WOULDNT READ ON....

I had the Paragard IUD put in at the begining of October and my twins were born on September 9, 2009. In the begining i bled for about 3 month straight, non-stop. After that I would have my period abnormally long and for the rest of the month until i started my period again I would have this discharge that just smelled horrible. I'm on my cycle right now and it's been over a month now with heavy bleeding non-stop it never gets light its just heavy the entire month through. Not just that but it smells gross and i have huge blood clots. My blood clots are so big that they come out when i pee... some times i'll be walking and I feel them come out too. It grosses me out i can imagine the reader. I hate being like this but I do want the birth control. I just hope that every thing is ok.

My senior year of high school I was diagnosed with cervical cancer and i had to have surgery. when I started college my period was non-stop all day every day for an entire year! and that's not an exaggeration I litterally bled for an entire year. I think my blood count was low because I would sleep all day and night never went to class ever. I slept so much that my room mate and dorm neighbor nicknamed me Coma, like a-coma. This was about 5 years ago... I just hope thats not whats going on this time. that would really suck if it was. Well i hope what i had to say helped you out.

Paragard & light bleeding around period time
I just started my paragard in March after my postpartum with my daughter. I bleed for a week after it got put in. Now it''s about the time of my period and I have some spotting all week where I think I''m going to get my period and then 2 days later it stops. I get cramps and feel very bloated. I am irregular also, so my periods never come on time. Is this spotting normal? I just want to make sure the paragard is working without me having to get a test to check!

The Neverending Flow
I have to say, this ParaGuard is the best birth control method I've ever used.

I got it in December 09, started cramping immediately, and had yucky discharge. My doctor told me this is normal, don't be such a hypochondriac, it'll level out. Then starting Jan 2010 I started what I thought was a normal period, and I'm still on it. I'm normally a spotter, very, very ridiculously light on my periods, but now, I'm Niagra Falls. I'm having blood clots the size of a golf ball coming out, I cringe whenever I have to cough or sneeze. That is so gross I haven't even wanted to have sex since this started, not to mention now sex is Extremely uncomfortable since I've gotten it put in. Is anyone else having this problem of it hurting during intercourse and then making the bleeding worse?

Its now May, my doctor says everything is fine, its in okay, my blood count is just ducky, had an ultrasound to see if my insides were where they were supposed to be, my doctor put me on progesterone to see if THAT would stop the bleeding,....all to no avail. I'm so glad to see others are having this issue, I thought I was the only one out there. I'm getting this thing taken out, I tried asking my doctor to take it out, only to be told that he doesn't like to put them in just to take them out right away, and I need to give it time. I tried that...now I'm going to another doctor to get it removed on the 24th.

But on the bright side, it was a wonderful tool to promote abstinence.

Tomorrow Im getting an ultrasound to see if everything is in place. Im so worried. I hope everything is okay. this bleeding is scaring me.

iud paragard Bleeding
THis sounds just like me, I had mine in Oct of 09 and everything was great till I got a MASSIVE period in Jan 10. Ever since then I have been bleeding it is now June 10. I went back to planned parenthood and they said to lose weight and it would help so I have been going to the gym and watching what I eat and it has not helped either. It is weird because i find the only time I stop bleeding is if I Drink Alcohol and it will only stop for two days. Has anyone found a way to make it stop or any reasons why it is happening?

I had mine in for a whole year and the whole year I bled but I too realized that only time that I stopped bleeding was when I drunk alcohol. Which I find very odd because doesn't alcohol thin out your blood, which means that you blood more. Very odd!

this sounds very familiar.. i've had mine recently removed and wondering how long the irregular bleeding will last. I'm just hoping it's not some type of infection undiagnosed, but my gyno, seemed to think removing it and putting me on Provera for 7 days would stop and make my life easier. Hasn't worked. I'm 46, probably older, but I'm just ready for a hysterectomy if this is what life will be like. Still sex-drive, and read that Provera can induce periods instead of stopping them. At this point, don't know how I'm alive, picked up Iron pill, and just want ONE DAY of NO BLEEDING AT ALL! JUST ONE!

My paragard was put in In early October of '09, i bled for about a week and then did not bleed at all for a about 4 months or so, but i was exclusively breastfeeding. Once my daughter started on solids i began spotting, i now bleed most days, usually light spotting but a day or two a month it is more normal flow. Only a few days scattered throughout the month am i ever blood free, it is definitely bothersome, not uncomfortable for me, just annoying to deal with! I am in nursing school and can in no way risk getting pregnant now until i graduate, we don't even want more kids (have 4) but our last baby is a tubal reversal baby and anyone thinking of getting their tubes tied i definitely don't recommend it, that was way worse as i had post tubal syndrome and started going through early menopause symptoms at the age of (then) 25! I also refuse to take any other birth control since i am against artaficial hormones being pumped into my body. My husbang and i have decided to leave the paragard in till 6 months before i graduate, at least then if we accidentally got pregnant it would not be detrimental to our future, and we will just try NOT to get pregnant. There is a book call Taking Charge of Your Fertility, by Toni Weschler. The completely all natural form of birth control, or to try to get pregnant. We used it to conceive our youngest and can use it to avoid pregnancy as well, the only sucky part about that is you are always horniest when you are fertile!

I got my paragard put in on the 3rd of may, and it's almost my 2 month anniversary with this god forsaken thing. I've been on all sorts of BC pills, but because I am bi-polar, the hormones turn me into a nut case...and of course make it impossible to lose any weight. I decided to get the paragard after being with my boyfriend for a year and wanting the freedom back from the hormones. I've been bleeding and cramping for just about the entire time...REALLY bad cramping. We've only had sex 3 times in the 2 months since getting the paragard because of the bleeding and cramping...and every time we have sex, the symptoms get worse. But at least the IUD is working somehow. I haven't gotten pregnant...but that's probably because we aren't having sex Smile
I've felt up there, as well as the doctor, and know it's in place. what the hell.
I'm tired all of the time and all I want to do is curl up in a ball on the couch with a heating pad. Should I just get this thing removed, or should I stick it out a little longer?

i have been bleeding for 3 months with my iud
i got my Paragard inserted on March 19, 2010. the very next day, i began bleeding. since then, i have not stopped. i have also been on depo-provera since 2006, and had just come off of it BEFORE getting my Paragard in place. I have a horrible odor coming from my vagina all the time, the discharge is a thick brown looking mucas..almost resembles the color of mud i guess..its so thick, that i have to scrape it off my underwear (when i go in the public restrooms) otherwise i have that unbearable odor again, but even worse..ugh! the money that i SHOULD be saving on birth control pills i now use on tampons/pads...AND new underwear. This is beyond humiliating when i become intimate with my boyfriend. It bothered him in the beginning, but now the "crime scene" mess is just the norm between the two of us.. but its still uncomfortable, i can never relax when we have sex because i'm always so worried about how big of a mess its going to make. i hope this is something that stops soon, i am going to discuss regulating my periods with BC pills with my doctor, but NOT as a permanent option. The hormones turn me into a total nutcase! reading the responses to this problem, i feel a sense of relief, it seems almost completely normal. Maybe its the IUD? Maybe its my body adjusting to coming off of the Depo?.. combo of both? either way, i paid quite a bit of money for this damn thing, and its going to stay in! thanks guys Smile

Hello every one... I had posted on March 20th, 2010 about constant bleeding. I had my twins on 09/09/09 and had the paragard insterted in October. So from October to May I had constant bleeding. Thats 7 months with non stop bleeding all day every day. But now for the past two months I have had a regular period lasting only one week and blood clot free. So with that being said I have only one problem now. I was told after the paragard was inserted that I had to check every month to see if the strings were there and for the past two months they havent been there. so its like a give and take kinda thing. I stopped bleeding but now I'm scared that it's floating somewhere in my body. Who knew that this would be such a pain in my ass. but I guess it's the price we have to pay for wanting to mess around and not get knocked up. lol something else thats funny about that I'm on this BC and I havent even had sex since my twins were born, no damn time to have sex. I think I need to take it for a ride and see how good this BC works... lol I'm just kidding... or am I???...

Bleed all the time with the paraguard
Hello everyone! I just wanna say that I've had my paraguard in for almost 4yrs. I bleed everytime I have sex. At first I thought something was wrong. I went to the doctor and they tested me for EVERYTHING, including veneral diseases. I was completely negetative. This paraguard makes me bleed during intercouse and inreturn gives me an infection. (The mix of blood and semen) I'm torn because I don't want anymore children right now, I don't wanna take any birth control with hormones in them but at the same time I'm tired of bleeding during intercourse. The one thing I CAN say about the paraguard is that, it keeps me from getting pregnent.

I had the paragard inserted on September 1st and have been bleeding extremely heavy with terrible cramping since. After reading all these posts I've decided I'm going to have this thing taken out. Can't imagine being like this for 4 months +

Just got the IUD
I just had the Paraguard IUD inserted on Friday (9/30/10) and I have had horrible cramps, which is normal right after you get it. After reading all these posts, does anyone have anything positive to say? I'm scared.
