Q: Constipation , its causes and treatments
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 5th, 2009
I am having lower intestinal discomfort. I have been suffering from constipation for 10 years and mostly take Senna tablets for that. It's been worse for last few months. If I eat a little (like half an apple at lunch time), I feel very full!
My doctor has suggested to see a GI. I personally feel it is just severe constipation making me feel full all the time. I have regular bowel movement. It's always hard and I always feel half empty. Recently I have switched to 80% vegetables and fruit diet and it has help somewhat but again lower abdominal discomfort is there.
Any advise will be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
- M. Siddiqui

The information you provided is not enough to explain your condition as only constipation.

Constipation is a condition in which a person experiences hard feces that is hard to expel. Constipation is sometimes rather considered as a symptom than a specific illness. Therefore, it is very important to detect the exact cause for the constipation. It might be related to slowed transit in the intestines or intestinal paralysis, mechanical causes from tumors, or morphological abnormalities. Neurological disorders might also cause constipation.

It might also be present in extreme cases of dehydration. Constipation is often seen in psychosomatic disorders such as anxiety.
Visiting a gastrointestinal specialist is recommended to determine the exact cause for the constipation. Meanwhile, taking food rich in dietary fiber might help to reduce the constipation.

Please note, that taking Sena for more than one week without a doctor’s supervision is not highly recommended.

It is possible that a Longer period of unsuccessfully treated constipation might produce bowel distension that might be felt like being full. Bowel discomfort might also be present. Increased amounts of gasses that are not released due to prolonged degradation might additionally distend the intestines.
