Q: Constipation after gallstone removal
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 21st, 2009
Hi, I've had GB stones for years. It was finally removed in July due to a severe attack, which elevated my liver enzymes. It was completely filled with stones (had to be cut open and stones removed, it was stuck) no bile at all. Before this I had several BM's a day, never ever constipated. Since surgery, I've had severe constipation, using colace and Miralax, (per doctor) with the result just being more cramping and bloat. Lots of nausea. I feel like I have a partial obstruction, or this is what I imagine one would feel like. It started within a day or so of surgery and is just getting worse. It was a lap chole. I look about 5 months pregnant all the time. Any advice? My gastro says it will go away...sigh. Thanks, ralfie

Having severe constipation and a distended belly are not normal 4 months after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Unfortunately, there are MANY potential causes of constipation and, therefore, I cannot offer you a specific diagnosis over the internet.

If you have not already done so, then consultations with your surgeon, and perhaps with a GI specialist, would appear to be appropriate (also, given your symptoms, an upper GI series with small bowel follow-through or a CT scan of the abdomen may be helpful to rule-out a partial bowel obstruction, although having a bowel obstruction for 4 months would be quite unusual).
