Q: constant heart pounding

I'm 20 years old, female seem to be in good health. Have been to Dr. in the past about chest pains and rapid heart but he didn't seem concerned (echocardiogram and ekg normal). I know my stress and anxiety levels are high, but I don't seem to be able to snap out of it. My mind may seem calm at times, but for certain my heart isn't. Lately my heart rate is generally over 100 bpm, on average between 100 and 120, sometimes gets as high as 144. A good 90% of the time I am aware of the beating, often pounding of my heart. I get palpitations frequently, almost every day--the sort that feels like a great, sudden THUD and the fluttering, irregular flip-flops.

...how can this be normal? Is it possible that there actually is nothing wrong and that I should not be concerned? Even when I am calm I sometimes get sudden, unexpected, fluttering palpitations. Is there anyone else out there experiencing this with Drs saying nothing is wrong?? This is frustrating beyond words.

Do you have high heart rate (tachycardia) all the time or you have sudden attacks of tachycardia?
Do you have tachycardia when you are psychically calm?
Have you ever been examined in the same time while you were experiencing tachycardia? If yes, What type of tachycardia the ECG showed?
Have doctors ever examined your thyroid gland function?

I wouldn't call it sudden attacks, but I have the tachycardia more often than not, and yes I often have it when I am physically calm.
I have been examined for thyroid in the past and that was normal.

Palpitations are often sudden and unexpected.

I was recently put on Xanax for anxiety, it helps it slow down somewhat at times but that doesn't seem to get rid of palpitations at all.

I wouldn't know what sort of ECG showed up (it was a long time ago and he didn't even say)--hopefully I'll have one soon; I have an appointment soon.

Anxiety can cause tachycardia but the most benign type - sinus tachycardia. You will probably need to wear holter apparatus for monitoring and recording the heart rhythm for 24 hours per day even during the sleep. 24-hours holter-monitoring will show us the type of tachycardia you have. You can consult some cardiologist about this.
