Q: Constant clearing of throat
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 2nd, 2009
I have constant clearing of the throat, i have been told there are no polyps, my tonsils were removed when I was 4, I only seem to be slightly allergic to dustmite according to the allergist, I have tried a number of over the counter medications and prescription meds to no avail - I have also tried rinsingwith salt water. I clear my throat every few minutes, constantly, I am not allergic to milk or yeast. One of the doctors suggested that I might have non allergic rhinitis as there was a definite post nasal drip - no-one seems interested to help, it is not life threatening but very embarassing.....Please help

The post nasal drip might be due to rhinitis, but sinusitis can cause it, too. You might want to visit another Ear, Nose and Throat specialist in order to check the condition of the sinuses (both maxillary and frontal). The inflammation of the sinuses might cause enough fluid for post nasal drip to occur. An X-ray of the sinuses might be required. If sinusitis is confirmed, then the specialist might prescribe antibiotics if bacteria is found or treat only the inflammation with anti-inflammatory drugs.
