Q: confidence to get HIV tested

Hello everyone! Just like the many other posts on this board I am worried that I may have contracted HIV.

About 2 months ago I was away on holiday in the UK and went to my cousins wedding. While there I got -extremely- drunk, and ended up going home with a girl.

I asked her if she had any STDs, and she said no, but unfortunatly we didnt have a condom. Like I said, I was really drunk, so I decided to do it anyway (HUGE mistake). We had unprotected vaginal and anal sex.

Anyway, about a month later, my best friend got sick with a cold, which he quickly passed on to me. Now, im not sure if I developed these symptoms independantly OR if he just gave me a cold. About a week later another one of my close friends got a very bad headcold, which he also passed on to me. So I have been kind of sickly for the past 2 weeks.

The symptoms ive had are: Runny nose, Painful sinuses, Cough (from the runny nose), and what seems to be a slight reddish rash on me which seems to get worse the more I am stressed. I have been INCREDIBLY stressed lately with school and work, and the worry of HIV has just added to it, which I believe *may* be the cause of my rash. They day I started researching HIV I also got kind of itchy on my body, again I believe it to be stress induced, but I obviously could be wrong.

I do not have a sore throat, I have no been having constant headaches, I am sleeping pretty much regularly, I have no night sweats, and no bowel movement problems.

No, I KNOW I need to get tested, but for anyone else that has been in my position you must know how stressfull and difficult it is to get the courage to go. I would just like some reassurance and someone to give me hope for not having HIV.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Welcome to EHEALTH forum!
Your worrying is reasonable, cause every unprotected sexual intercourse poses risks for HIV or STD's.
Personally, I think your symptoms aren't due to risky behavior, but due to other circumstances, getting cold (prolonged cold due to stressing, not fully recovered from first cold) and stressing about having contracted HIV.
It is well known that, stress and anxiety can also produce symptoms in some people, even though they do not have HIV.
Because of the nonspecific symptoms associated with primary or acute HIV infection, symptoms are not reliable ways to diagnose an HIV infection.

When do you plan to get tested?

OK, in UK, the chances of getting HIV is 1:1000. An estimation of the people living with hiv against the total population.
The risk of getting HIV through anal and vaginal sex is very low because HIV is a very weak virus. It is assumed to be only by 1% chance on only ONE sexual exposure. Hiv rarely transmit from women to men because hiv tends to like the tissue found inside th vagina. If you are circumsized then the risk is probably lower.
But it is sad to say that the risk inolved is real risk. You can get hiv in only one exposure.
Another research has shown that anxiety can lead to symptoms that mimic HIV symptoms. Please stay calm and positive. People tend to form symptoms once they read an article. The rash could be one of those symptoms.
In addition most people that caught HIV would have fever higher than 38 degree and headache. ( True in up to 70% of people that just contract HIV)

I recommend taking HIV testing for the actual result.
Remember to use condom next time.
