I was a nursing major for about 3 yrs, but changed to psychology bc I want to be a psychiatrist and though I am not a doctor either I've gained a good deal of knowledge about the body and the way it works from the nursing classes I have taken. The advice and responses you have provided to others seems most accurate according to what I have learned. I do have a question about the morning after pill though, luckily I haven't had too much experience with it. My understanding of it wasn't correct until I looked on the internet and did some research after taking it for the first time. My boyfriend and I were having sex the condom broke and he ejaculated in me. I didn't remember the exact date of my last period, but I knew it had been somewhere around 2 weeks (from the first day of my cycle to that night). This happened Wed night Aug 6th. The next night I was at my boyfriends and he and I decided I should get the map so the next evening, Fri Aug 8th, I went and bought it from the pharmacy. I went home and read up on it before I took it. I didn't end up actually taking it until after midnight so I guess technically I took it on the 9th. The next morn, Sat, I figured out the exact date of my last period got on the computer and found an ovulation calender. According to my cycle info the calander highlighted a 6 day window showing which days I was fertile from lowest to highest. The 6th and 7th were medium/high fertility days and the 8th, my ovulation day, was highest fertility. I'm wondering what my chances are of being pregnant? I took it within the 72 hours, but it was close to the end of the 72 hour window and like I said it was past midnight so I took it after my ovulation day, but I don't know if that makes a difference since it was just a matter of hours. If an egg was fertilized could it stop the pill from working or does it have to be fertilized and attached to/implanted in the uterus? If it does have to be implanted too would the egg be able to travel and implant itself that quickly? I know this is a bunch of questions at once and I hope I haven't confused you. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance if you are able to take the time to help. If there's anything you don't understand let me know and I will try to clear it up. Thanks again!

Morning after pill can work in three different ways: It prevents the release of the egg, it prevents the sperm from meeting the egg, and finally it prevents the fertilized egg from implantation. If implantation has already happened then plan b will have no effect.

It's about 89% effective (give or take) when taken within the first 72 hours, and from there the percentage drops depending on how long you waited (you can take it up to 120 hours).

You did what you needed to do, so now you just kind of have to wait it out to see if it worked. I know you said that you read up on it, but I still want to give you a heads up that your period will probably be a little weird for up to 3 months. It could be late or early, heavy or light, or you may just have some unusual spotting for awhile-- it's normal. So try not to panic if your period isn't how it always is or if you start feeling like junk for awhile. --- I just don't want you to worry if you don't have to. If your period doesn't come when you're expecting it, then take a pregnancy test just in case.

Have you considered doubling up two different forms of birth control?
