Q: Conception and stopping the use of birth control pills
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 15th, 2008
I have been taking Seasonale birth control pills for about 3 years now. I am considering soon coming off the pill and trying to get pregnant. Since this pill alters the natural monthly cycle to only 4 times a year, I was wondering can this have a negative effect on the quality of my eggs? Can this cause complications or birth defects since I have taken it for so long? And how long should I be off the pill before I should try to get pregnant?

You can start trying to conceive as soon as you quit the pills. Pills do not have a negative impact on the eggs’ quality nor can they cause birth defects after you go off them. The only problem is that the body needs time (a few months usually) to establish regular ovulations (egg-cell release) and full fertilization ability.
