What is the common cold?
The common cold is probably the most well known illness known to man. In the course of a year, people in the United States experience about 1 billion colds and account for more doctor visits than any other condition.  But many people don't really understand what a cold is...and how it's different than the flu.

The common cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract, which includes the nose and throat. These minor infections of the nose and throat are caused by several different viruses.  In fact, over 200 different viruses can cause colds.
