Q: Colposcopy and mental health

I have a colposcopy scheduled for Monday and am getting really nervous about it. I have had panic attacks in the past, including one that I experienced during my pap smear. My psychiatrist gave me Ativan to calm me during the procedure. It's only 1 mg, but she gave me a script for 2 pills incase I need to take another one. On top of that, I'm experiencing extreme anxiety because I fear bad news. I've had hpv since I was 15 and I am now 28. I have not had an annual for 3 years, so I may have just shot myself in the foot. Because I was so depressed, I wasn't really concerned about whether I was taken by cancer or not...as terrible as that may sound. Now that I'm feeling emotionally stable...or at least to some degree, I'm having to deal with the damage of not caring for so many years. Any suggestions?

You need to realize that the benefits of having the colpo far outweigh your fears. If you do have cervical cancer/ cancerous cells/ precancerous cells, then the sooner you know, the sooner you can begin treatment. I had to have a colpo last year because of abnormal cells but the colpo came out fine and my last pap was normal. So a few abnormal cells do not automatically mean there is something wrong with you.
Take a deep breath- take the pills if you need to- give yourself a pat on the back for having the procedure and vow to never miss your annual exam again.
Good luck.

Thank you for the support. I know I must have this done. It's going to kill me to wait 1 to 2 weeks for the results. I'm definitely filling the script for the Ativan.

Unpleasant experience, but I did it. Now I have to wait for my results...should take up to 10 days. How sweet. During the biopsy, they found 4 questionable areas...and took a sample each. Any thoughts on this? Is it typical to make more than one cut?
