Q: Colds causing dizziness ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 15th, 2009
Question: Every now and then I have really random episodes of severe dizzy spells which lead to nausea, cold sweats and a rapid pulse(i'm assuming due to a drop in my BP)..this happens at times when I'm sitting at a desk so there are no sudden movements, I stay well hydrated and don't have a problem with blood sugar...I have noted that the past 2 times i've had these dizzy spells i have been recovering from a cold..is it possible my colds are leading to some sort of inner ear inbalance and causing these dizzy spells? Is there anything I can do about this? It is so severe I am sometimes unable to drive..also, the dizzy spell today in particular caused me to vomit and i'm on birth control..I took my pill at 11am and was sick at 2:45pm..should I be concerned about this? or would the pill be in my system by then
THANK YOU!

Dizziness might be a symptom that accompanies cold. The viral infection which is the most often cause for common cold might cause increased irritability in some parts of the central nervous system. If the inner ear is affected, then disturbances in the balance (dizziness) might be expected.
The pill was absorbed in the bloodstream by the time you vomited.
