Q: Cold knees and feet

Hi everyone i have a question and wonder if anyone else has had same problem.
When i have a shower and dry myself my buttocks, knees & feet and purple and pink in colour and constantly cold.
The toe nails are brittle and two that dropped off have grown back but feel like rubber. Ive had my circulation checked with my family doctor 5 times and no problem there his only thought was my spinal disc swelling.
I sit with either two pairs of socks on or a covered hot water bag under my feet to try get them warm.
my right knee has been swollen badly since the disc prolapse 3 yrs ago now and never went down.
Has anyone else ever experienced this and been given and actual explanation to why it happens.
I do know my swollen ankles are caused by my medication of fentanyl patches.

Can I ask you who or how you know that your ankles are swollen from fentanyl?
I have the same issue with my ankles but I swell all the way from my toes to my neck
I am chubby not sure if face swells but I do not think so. Last year I went from 170-175 to 230- 235 in just over a week or two. My nails now spilt. was told poor circulation.
I have started having pedicure once or twice a month not for the nail polish although it is nice. I for the message/rub it eases the pain and the swelling some. I find my feet after are not so cold. A few days later though I am back to frozen feet I wear wool socks with slippers on carpeted floors I can not seem to get them warm. Can I ask you how much fentanyl you are on? I am on 150 mcg. Along with 20 mg of morphine every 4 hours prn, and arthotech 2 times a day at 50 mg each. Just recently I have also been give the marjauna pill to help enhance the fentanyl (help it work better). Maybe we could exchange diffent pain coping idea's. pm
me anytime,
Taykare

sorry for late reply.
hi my pain management doctor told me swelling of ankles was a side affect.
my fentanyl was at 50 micros per hour and now reduced to 37 ph along with arcoxia 75 mg twice a day and 3mg of buccastem anti sickness tablet.
have same as you with carpets but need to keep extra socks and slippers on to keep feet warm.
if you are like me if your feet are cold the whole body is cold.
i have been on many tabs but a lot have been trial and error along with physio and tens machine but both failed. Basically just was told get on with it your longterm nothing can be done.
i am optomistic to start on the spinal injections in few months. waiting time in united kingdom is horrendous for hospital appointments, i do want off the fentanyl.
just checked my e.mails before sending this and according to my laptop it was sent. will send you a different one incase you have it now. sorry about that i did lose first one but second one did say it was posted to you.
thanks again keep in touch.

thankyou both
that was my exact thought months ago and decided to keep having it checked. each time i had the pulse on top of my foot checked and told it was fine.. only since my disc prolapse has this been a problem.
i do keep moving as the pain makes you active its either can,t sit too long, stand, or lie down and moving is the only way through it so its not anything im doin wrong.
need to have this investigated again as i agree with you both. It was when i noticed the skin colour change after a shower and where the rest of me was natural my buttocks, knees and feet were purple and deep pink.

I doctored with an Internal Medicine physician for two years and he did not know why my legs from the knees down were this pinkish color...Darker than the rest of me...Finally I went to a Dermatologist who showed me how the valves were not working inside my legs and the blood flow was not returning and pumping back...This was poor circulation...When this happened it was leaving the iron deposits at my skin which was discoloring it...Since I wear a special elastic stocking it has stopped...However, because of this I will not attempt a knee replacement surgery as I am not assured that the circulation would be there after the surgery...I would wonder, what if it did not take that it could be a possible amputation...So I am happy in life being who I am....

gosh carolineEF.thanks for the last message. I definately think you made the right decision not to go for surgery.
i remember when my surgeon turned me down for back surgery and i cried the whole day. i just wanted out of pain and have a normal life back, to be able to run and work and do all the wonderful things i was capable of doin and it was like a thunderbolt hitting me that this was it. My orthopeadic doctor who referred me told me surgery had a great chance of working and i would return to work so my hopes were built up so high.
i guess in times of severe pain you grab on to any hopes thrown and it was a hard lesson for me to learn that you don,t do that.
Ive fought my demons now for 3 yrs and now still in pain but content i have a loving family and a way of reaching out to others on this forum and YEAH pain is the devil but im happy too.

That post was interesting about your legs and poor circulation. As for amputation that would yake quite along time seeing as you put the stockings on and your legs are no longer the dark pink colour. Were they swollen as well? My own mother had poor circulation in her legs and after my Mom going to the doctor for years as to why her legs were pink then a dark pink then turned purple the doctor's gave her stocking to help with the circulation only my Mom was allergic to the stocking or materials in the stockings then I guess a few years ago unknown to us they started making cotton ones, long story short my Mom had poor circulation in her legs (also had cp from birth) so very different for her but any how 15 to 20 years her legs were like this the only time the was a riskof her loosing one of her legs was due to an infection forom a sore on her left leg that
was under the skin and not treated properly by her doctor. My Mommy died this year to try and save her life I let the doctors cut her left leg off at mid thigh as she had gotten flesh eating disease or necrotizing fasii mytoesis and died within 18 hours of on set. If I were you watch your legs any bump and cut sore bite what ever be very careful wash it keep it clean get to a doctor that is good and cares. I would hate if something like this happened to any one else in this entire world. I think people need to know this disease is out there and there is no cure
the only way to stop the infection from spreading is to cut it off and it spreads fast 3cm per hour on avaerage. Of 200 cases 60 die within the first 24 hours.

good morning its now 10.45 uk time and just logged on. takyare i have left you an e.mail and so sorry about your mum.
its been a few yrs since my own mother passed on but i do remember my grandmother many yrs ago having an amputation and she had been bed ridden for years. i was too young to understand alot then but i did ask my own mum yrs later and it was bad circulation as then home care was alot different it was family doctor or hospital.
we now have district nurses and alot more help available within requirement of what the problem is.
will ask my family doctor about support stockings but with so much back pain could be awkward to pull on as any pressure and im through the roof ?

Diabetes is very often the reason for poor circulation in the limbs from what I understand...I would say what I speak about has more to do with the heart pumping actions or just plain older age...These are not the normal stocking and not the zipper up deal...I order these from a company out East...The reason that I worried with the knee replacement was healing...What if it did not heal properly?...Then the problems would arise...I have just had too many years of golfing with our children over the years and the turning motion on swinging the club made me pay the price in the end...I accept this....I have no regrets...

I get around great, but the pain of life and age can get to you at times...Being as proud as I am, I refuse to use a cane...I have found that every pound you put on your body is paid for with a price of pain...Hence, you get your weight down...Legs suffer from weight...It is amazing the things in life that you understand with more depth as you age...Things that never used to make sense, now connect....For some reason my brain is working in reverse...Instead of slowing down is and has been going full speed ahead..... Shocked

Hopefully a few of our hints on life will help other people along the way....

Have a good day...
Caroline

i never wanted to use a cane but no matter how i tried its my only way of getting about.
it took far too long to get a diagnosis nearly a year and although it was baby steps as i called it the damage was already done trying to walk without one. 10 months for first mri scan and another 4 months for results. i had a bad turn in july last year and my legs totally went from me and used a wheelchair for 6 wks and required a second mri scan. my pain management doctor who sent me for it went on holiday after it was done and never returned and i fell through the system again. nearly 10 months again down the line my family doctor recieved my results out the blue and an abnormality was detected but we don,t know what as no read out results sent with it.
i remember you advised me that this will now be classed as an old scan so will need another one to give me exact findings.
its been tough and had very little support apart from my family doctor.
i shall say again fought many demons along the way but im still here and fighting on.
im so glad you have found that spirit too and i hope things may still improve and you shall remain to keep yourself motivated and kick lifes ass. lol good luck carolineEF. i enjoy reading your advice to other users and glad to meet you using the forum.

Hi again Ioka:

Only speaking with another woman who has known this type of pain in her life, can you truly grasp the power of the Internet and more readily accept that you are not alone...You can truly feel the closeness as you type your words of encouragment through the keyboards...

I know that I, too, will soon have to start using a cane.....I must put pride on the back burner and admit that the body can grow weak, yet the mind stays strong...I don't fear growing old, but I hate to accept defeat...

I thank you for your wise words of acceptance...Oh, and the name is Caroline...The EF stands for ehealth Forum...Sometimes I don't know where I come up with names... Rolling Eyes

i do feel alive when im using this forum its very true and although we are all thousands of miles apart it feels like ive found a new family.
i have already recommended it to a friend and sent an invite to join.
its funny to think that i could speak to a neighbour or my own family but they will never understand the severity of pain and the effort it can take in one day to see it through. thats the power of the internet as you say caroline and you are made feel welcome and supported.
its ones own private space to let your frustrations go and yet feel content that your not alone.
we have nothing like this in uk and to think with a flick of a switch your on here.

hello jerome and welcome to e,health forum. This is exactly the problem i had and was told my circulation was fine. I have a chronic back problem due to a prolapsed disc so i believe i do have circulation problem as not as active as i used too be and only 48.
with regards to your age i would think if you have no other health prolems like diabetes or raynuads disease which is maily hands and feet it maybe no more than your healthy age of 80.
As we always advise if your concerned see you doctor.
may i say i think you are marvelous to be 80 and never been sick and thankyou for your best wishes.
I shall do a bit of research for you and see if i find anything that maybe causing your problem but i think you have nothing to worry about.
kind regards
ioka.
