Q: COBRA Insurance not extenteding to LDA's

I am a 24 year old male. I recently graduated from college. During that time I was on the insurance of my mother who worked at a hospital. While on the insurance 3 months ago I was in a serious accident and did some significant damage, especially to my shoulder and arm. There was no way i could work. Soon after, my mother's department at the hospital was bought out and she was given 30 days notice plus 3 weeks severence pay. After that she would have to sign up for COBRA coverage. After several failed attempts to find a new position w/in the system, the 30 days plus 3 weeks was over. During that time many tests and rehab sessions were conducted due to my injuries. It turns out I, the 24 year old Legally Domacile Adult, could not be carried on the COBRA. Since then I figured I at least needed some insurance, so I bought a short term plan that does not cover pre-existing conditions. Now with more doctor's visits, tests to be done, and a possible surgery soon to come, I have a few questions that I could use some help with.

Can an Insurance company just drop someone like me and leave me SOL?
Is the insurance company responsible whatsoever in this manner to cover me? Is there anything I can do?
What can I do? Is there anyone (i.e. lawyer, health ins rep) that can help me?
How do I pay these outrageous bills?

It just doesn't seem right. I'm spending more time trying to figure out how to pay to get healthy, than getting healthy. It's very frustrating and I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

COBRA
Why can't you sign up with COBRA with your own policy? Most companies will allow a dependent to sign up with their own policy even after the parent isn't with COBRA. I believe that it would have to be within that 18 month range to be allowed. You may want to double check it. good luck
