Q: 5cm lesion on liver

My best friend, for the past 2 years, has had the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, itching, sweating, irritability, confusion, headaches, severe right-sided abdominal pain below rib cage, abdominal distension, low grade fevers, loss of appetite, and fatigue. She recently went to emerg for chest pain and they did a CT scan which incidentally revealed a 5 cm leision on her liver. The doctor told her to follow up with her family doctor, but her family doc has been aware that my friend has been having abnormal liver function tests for years and will do nothing to help her. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with her?

Back in May I was experiencing severe abdominal pain along with nausea and vomiting, sweating as well as all the other symptoms that you describe except I did not have confusion. I went to my Gastro doc and they ran a scope to check out my stomach, which is painless, and I had gastritis (inflammation of the stomach) and then I had an ultrasound of my liver, gallbladder, spleen, etc. What came back was that I have a hemiangioma on my liver which is a benign tumor...it basically is where blood vessels come together and I will have it looked at again in Novemeber to see if it has gotten bigger. Gastritis can be caused by several things like taking NASID or certain medications or B12 deficiency, too much stomach acid, etc. I now inject myself monthly with B12 and limit my medication but take Prilosec and Regland (first to lower the release of stomach acid and the 2nd for nausea).

Family doc not doing anything about the abnormal function test? That is terrible. I would ask him / her why and proceed to find another physician. It is one thing to tell a patient about abnormal tests however if he / she kept it from your friend until now...then I would seriously consider reporting that individual to the board.

Thank you for sharing zeigmyster,
my friend has been daignosed with gastroesophageal reflux in the past and takes rabeprazole for it (similar to prilosec) but her B12 has always tested normal. She has had an ultasound in the past as well which showed her liver to be fatty but the report stated that because she is obese, she is not a good candidate for an ultrasound as an ultrasound would not be able to pick up suble abnormalities and thus be an inappropriate test for someone of her size.

Wow this is a first for me. I've never heard of an ultrasound that could not be used successfully on a person, because of their size. If this is the case there must be another way to get a closer look.

I do hope she gets the treatment that she may need in order to get to the bottom of what is creating havoc on her system. Being that ill is miserable.
