I am a father looking for any information I can gather for my adult son. He is 30 now, and was diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder at age 15. It was really awful for a couple of years, but then John was placed on Clozaril (Clozapine), and his life began to change radically for the better. Much of the old John returned, and he was able to do many of things he used to be able to do. He went back to playing soccer, volunteering at the school I teach at, and working at church. About two years ago, things began to go downhill. He has always taken his meds, he doesn't use drugs, doesn't drink, and doesn't smoke. At first he began to be a little paranoid, thinking that players from other soccer teams wanted to hurt him. It gradually progressed until it got to the point the last few months that he was afraid to go outside. His primary concern was what he called "not feeling like himself". He began to hear voices, thinking that the devil was telling him bad things, things that he didn't believe in and hated. It got so bad that yesterday, he was hospitalized to try to stabilize him. What I am trying to find out is whether anyone who has been on Clozaril a long time like John, 12 years has found that it has begun to lose its effectiveness. Because it is such a new drug, there is little research, and I am trying to find out what I can in order to help the doctor, who has too many patients, as almost all public doctors do. If you have any experiences, thoughts, or information, please post it if possible. Thanks in advance for your responses!!!
