My 4 1/2 month old has had REALLY runny eyes since he was born. They get all gunky and goopy and im constantly having to wipe them clean. MY dr said that its ok and normal. She said that his tear ducts havent opened up yet. Is this normal? I figure it would clear up by now. Should I be worried???

If the doctor told you that it's ok and normal, I would trust that. If you are still concerned, you can always get a second opinion.

i understand my baby was like that too around that age i was worried about it and thought that it was maybe allergies but the doc said that it was a clogged tear duct also, after awhile they finnally gave her some drops for it and i only gave it to her like 2 or 3 times because i didnt know if it was burning her eyes or what. So i stopped giving it to her and about two weeks after that it had stopped and no more problems since and she is 11months. i really thinks its just goes away in due time. hope this helps so dont worry

I took care of a baby like that. My dr gave her eye cream. She was 12mo though. It may be normal the me that young and have it. If your very worried about it get a second opinion. Don't stress even more about it =] rainbow

I was just wondering if his eyes have improved yet? and if they did when? I have a 2 month old and his eyes have been like that too pretty much since he was a day old. I was wondering when my son's eyes are going to get better. I feel bad for him because they get soo gooped up and i'm constantly washing his face which he hates!

What you need to do is massage the inside of the eye wherethe tear duct is, massage it gently often..that will help open up the tear duct.

Also, bathe the eye in warm water before and after massaging.
Hope this helps.

closed tear ducts...
My son is 10 months old and his right eyes' tear duct is still closed. My dr. said for me to wait until 12 months of age before worrying b/c they ususally open own their own by then. Well I decided that I was tired of wiping his face and making him cry. So I took him to an infant eye specialist last week and she scheduled surgery!! She says that its not a concern until 9-12 months, but anything after that can begin to create damage longterm. So his surgery isn't scheduled for another month, she says there is a 2% chance that it will open on his own by then. So I would definitely get a second opinion. It won't hurt. She also says that this is very common and she does this procedure twice a month. Hope this helps!

Hello All.

My now 4 year old was born with blocked tear ducts. When we went and spoke with the specialist we were basically told that it will cause no real complications. It is more of a pain than anything as the child will grow up and always have tears.

To have the problem fixed is a very easy proceedure of unblocking the duct with a probe. We had the proceedure done with our daughter. Unfortunately it seems to have blocked again and we are looking at the proceedure for a second time.

In the end it is not much of a problem......more of a hassle then a complication and it is easy to fix

So dont worry yourself about it too much.

Blocked Tear Duct
Hi Everyone,

I was glad to read this forum and know we are not the only ones going through this. Our son is almost 3 and has had a probing and 3 different sets of tubes and nothing seems to work. Every so often we will have a good day with no tears or goop in the corner of his eye, but that is rare. Does anyone know what to do beyond probings and tubes? I think we even have our specialist stumped. Thanks for any feedback.
