One day about 7 months ago I woke up with a clicking sound in my throat. It only happens when I swallow (which is all the time) however not while eating or drinking. I can actually feel some kind of bone moving. Other people can hear it as well if they try to listen. It's worse when I lay down but if I get my neck in the right position it wont click. There is no pain just the feeling that your going crazy, like hearing voices in your head or something. I went to an ENT and he said it was arthritis. Then I went to see an arthritis doctor and he was stumped. He assured me it was not arthritis and confirmed it with a blood test.

When I first got this it was so awkard that I had trouble breathing and could not stop swallowing. I have since learned to live it but it is not fun. What do you think it is? I am also worried it is a symptom of something more serious. I am a smoker but I have no sore throat and the ENT said my throat looked fine when he looked down it. I am a 37 year old female. Can you help me???

Clicking Sound In Throat
I have a simular problem. About 3 months ago while lying down I heard this "clicking sound" I opened my mouth and I could hear it. It goes with my heartbeat. Icantakemy pulse and the clickingis right on with my pulse.
My family can hear it as well. The ENT has no idea and I went to a cardiologist he has no answers.

So someone said try to record it and it worked I have it on the recorder. However, does no good if no one can tell you what it is.

To Phoebes-
Just a suggestion, but think back... did you have any kind of accident or trauma to your head or neck? There are so many things that could cause your symptoms but you might start with possible fractures because the sound can be heard by others as well as yourself. That's why it could possibly be structural. (Fractured Hyoid bone, thyroid cartilege, styloid process...)

abnormal clicking in the throat.
Hi all, i had thesame abnormal sensation and clicking in my throat. Because i was worried about the situation, i started having anxiety attacks. I was refered to a neurology who told me that i had palatal Tremor in my throat. Go to the internet and read about palatal tremor. I had MRI of the brain stem with contrast and Mri of the neck and spine, lots of lab works. All came back normal. The neurologist gave me Klonopin 0.25mg twice a day, i have taken it for 2 weeks now and noticing improvements in my throat and the anxiety.

Have you looked at Eagle's syndrome?

This is an often overlooked syndrome that often gives the sensation of something in your throat, problems swallowing, and a variety of pains in the face, throat and neck. It is not easy to diagnose because it often doesn't show up on x-rays or MRI, and also many doctors have not heard of it and thus don't know what to look for.

A 3D-CT scan and an experienced ENT or maxillofacial surgeon are the best way to get it diagnosed. If well diagnosed it is usually treatable. Look for "Eagle's syndrome" on this forum and you'll find more information.

Hope this may help you. Best of luck.
