We are on day 3 after our newborn has been circumcised. We have been putting KY jelly on gauze every diaper change to prevent sticking. We have been told to clean with water and a cotton ball however this does not remove the KY jelly that is becoming caked on the penis. Does the ky jelly need to be removed every time we clean? If yes how do we remove it without rubbing?

i would use vaseline not KY jelly. We used 100% medical grade protroleum jelly and my son had no issues. There were times where I would have to rub it to get all the specs off but I just did it. I did it gently but theres nothin else you can do but clean it. I mean it hurts but you have to do it. Adam would hollar when I would clean it but after his diaper was back on he forgot all about it.

Ky jelly seems to much like a liquid.

I dont know I imagine that anything caked on would have to be removed immediately to prevent infection.

Unless its a scab. You can tell the difference between a scab and left over debri.

I would call your doc for sure.

I agree with Rosie. Vaseline or actually Neosporin with pain relief is a much better choice, and you won't have any issues with drying or caking. I have never heard of KY jelly being recommended. The vaseline is not just for the prevention of the wound sticking to the diaper, but for the speed of healing and the prevention of infection. You shouldn't have to rub it or anything, you don't want to mess with the healing process.
