Okay I will keep this short.

My child's mother went to the ER back in July for chest pains. They found that she had an enlarged spleen but in running the test realized that her kidneys weren't functioning properly and referred her to a kidney specialist. She got blood tests and an appointment (3 months later) last week and the doctor said that her gfr is at CKD stage 4.

She is 23 and our daughter is 4 and I am scared as heck.

She said she feels a little fatigue and every once in a while a numbness in one of her hands but other than that she feels fine and works six days a week as a cocktail waitress. She also only pees like twice a day. I have been reading what all this means on the internet and this whole ordeal is nothing short of surreal.

I need to know if there is any other condition that this could be that may be reversible. Is there any hope that something could be messing up the diagnosis or the tests? I keep reading that people with this condition that don't catch it until stage 4 usually die within 2 years. Our daughter will only be six. I can't raise her alone. I keep dreaming of her getting catheters stuck in her neck and chest cavity. She is going in tomorrow for a renal ultrasound and they are running like 30 other tests to try to find out what the source of the problem is. Is there any hope?

Please help.

Hi

I'm sorry you are going through this. Try to remain positive. Ask the doctors as many questions as you both can possibly think of...write them down as you think of them.
Today there are many new medications on the market, there is dialysis, if in fact she is in stage 4 it can stay that way for some time. I've been in stage 3/4 for many years. Monitoring is the key.

The doctors may want to do a biopsy to see what is causing her kidneys to do this, along with additional blood tests, urine test (24 hour urine collections), scans.

Hang in there, I know it's tough but please stay strong.

Keep us posted.

Thank you for the reply. It makes me feel better hearing from people. I can't really talk to her very much about it cause we are not on the best of terms, so all I have is this tremendous guilt.

I will keep you posted on her progress. She got done with all of the testing a few hours ago and we won't know anything for 7 days. It's gonna be a tough week.

It sounds like she has a very good Dr. that keeps on top of things. I know it's scary. I have also been at Stage 3/4 for a while. Once they find out what is causing it, there may be diets or medications that help. Also, dialysis has come a long way in recent years. I have a grand aunt that has been on dialysis for over 10 years. She is celebrating her 95th birthday this month. It is not a death sentence. Definitely keep us post on how she is doing. Good luck.
