In my experience this is nothing to worry about really but keep an eye incase things get really exagerated but its totally normal for the first few weeks, even couple of months for some, to feel any original symtoms increase.
I've been on a long list of different types of these pills, floroxotine, citaloprma, sertraline, mirtazapine and the list goes on.
None of which really helped me much but i do remember the 1st couple of months being a bit of a nighmare, i was lashing out at people, my anxiety got ridiculous etc etc......but as far as i can remember citalopram was the 2nd or third pills they tried me on and they're not exactly tongue hanging out the side of your mouth type pills.
The effects should calm dwn but if dnt then yeah, maybe these pills in particular aren't for him, there are tonns n tonns of others out there to try.
Like Georgia says tho, some people find it much more usefull seeking other types of treatment like one on one counceling (although in my experiance the waiting lists can be long) or group talking. Even gettin him to ring somewhere like the samaritans or somethijng simular.
Talking about and understanding why i was feelin like that in the 1st place was the biggest help for me. turns out ive jus been diagnosed with BPD so may be diferent but knowledge is power. The more I learn about my condition the easier it is to learn to deal with it and keep it at bay.
Good luck (not that you'll need it) sounds like u care very much n that's the best treatment anyone can get
