Q: Chronic tonsillitis
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 28th, 2008
My question is about my daughter. She has had a swollen throut for the last year off and on. It will last for months at a time. The military doctors said it was from nasal drip from allergies. They gave her 2 different allergy meds and they did not help. It went away for a few months and now has been back for the last month. I have tried giving her hot tea, ice cream and even wheatgrass. Nothing is helping. I have no idea nor does the doctors on what to do next. She has never had sneezing or stuffed up nose symptoms. Just her swollen throut. Do you have any ideas?

According to your description (swollen throat for more than a year) your daughter could be experiencing chronic tonsillitis. Chronic tonsillitis could be due to an infection, allergy, or both. Chronic tonsillitis is often manifested with enlarged tonsils (hyperplasia). Tonsils become enlarged even when they are not inflamed. If such hyperplasic tonsils get infected very often they can be surgically removed (tonsillectomy).
You may want to consult an ENT-specialist about this.
