My husband has been clearing his throat after every meal, and a lot in between for about 8 years. He has been to Specialists and Drs., and they say that there is nothing wrong with thim. You would think that I'd be used to it by now, but it's bothering me more and more. I have even been going to counciling, but it doesn't help. The only relief I get is wearing earplugs almost all the time. Right now he is taking
Dexilant. The last Dr. told him to take it for about 6 months and see what happens. Is there anybody else going though this?
Thanks

Debbie

Clearing his throat means what? Is something bothering him? In his throat? I have seen people who have this habit, they do it unconsciously. He could make a conscious effort to avoid doing that. But believe me there are a lot of people who do that as a habit.

My 14 year old does this very often, and it's very annoying. At first I assumed she might be coming down with something, but she never got sick. I asked her if her throat is sore, and she says no.
I attempted to point it out to her every time she did it, to try to find out what brings it on, but her reply is always the same..she doesn't have the need to cough, no itchiness, no soreness,.. nothing! She isn't even aware she did it.
I can add that it is never at a specific time, like only after eating, drinking, etc. She also has been seen by the family physician, which said she's in perfect health, with the exception of bad sinuses.
I've come to the conclusion that it's somehow an annoying habit that she has no explanation for, or it due to her sinus problems..drainage.
That being said, has you husband been seen an ENT?
It could be sinus drainage.

Throat clearing
Yes Debbie, my husband clears his throat all his waking moments. It's not just a hem,hem type of clear it is a deep throaty mucus clear (except it doesn't clear it), which turns my stomach every time he does it. He saw an ENT doctor for about 18 months who tried medication and diet, nothing worked so he did a barium swallow which showed up a pharyngeal pouch. We were told this would be causing it so he had surgery which was supposed to fix it. However it has been worse since the surgery. He was then sent to a GI specialist who is contemplating doing Nissan Fundoplication surgery. When they did an endoscopy they found a small GIST with an ulcer on it on his stomach wall, but the doctors have chosen not to do anything about this until the end of this year, when they might do the Nissan Fundoplication surgery at the same time. I hold no hope at all that this surgery will fix his problem. I too find this throat clearing very difficult to live with and I feel guilty about this. It doesn't seem to bother him and I can't understand how it can't when it is constant day in and day out. Eating, drinking, talking even cleaning his teeth makes it even worse. He has tried nasal sprays in case it was a sinus problem but that did nothing either. I keep telling him it must be habit, but he refutes that. Because he is retired the only time I am free of hearing this is when he goes out, or I go out without him, or he goes to sleep. I don't think the doctors believe how bad it is. Sorry for such a long reply, but I am constantly on the internet trying to find a solution to this. I don't think I have helped you Debbie, but your post did help me as I thought my husband must be the only person who has this problem. (and I thought I was the only wife who found it so hard to live with)

I had the same problem for a few years now, I would always take Ricola and that would help. I recently went to the dentists and was given free natural toothpaste for children and I stated using it, and my clearing problem stopped it tom's
toothpaste. I was using crest and colgate before and that was the problem for me. No more coughing and clearing my throat.
