For the past 2 1/2 months I have had a sore throat that will just not go away. The pain ranges, on the good days, from mild to severe. It is fine(no pain) in the morning and from there gets progressively worse. It starts on the right side of my throat and as the day goes on it spreads to the left. By night the pain has started to radiate to my ears, usually the right having the more significant pain. I have trouble sleeping and eating because of the pain and like I said, by morning it is fine but then continues it's normal phase through the rest of the day. I have been to my GP several times and have had strep tests done with results coming back negative and also when she looked in my throat saw nothing. I also ended up in urgent care because the pian got so severe I couldn't talk and it was extremely painful to swallow. It had felt like I was punched repeatedly in the throat, it actually gets painful to touch my throat. The lymphs nodes in my throat at times are swollen, but not all the time. I have tried everything I can think of, pain medications, benedryl, salt gargle and changing my toothbrush. I have seen some of the same symptoms on other posts, but like those I do not have acid reflux. Also I do not drink and neither my husband or myself smoke. This is really starting to wear on me so any help would be greatly appreciated.

throat and ear pain
I've been having the same thing, for around 4 weeks now. Tried this mouth wash from my doctor along with a Nasonex, seems to work as long as I stick to it. The mouth wash is Benzydamine (by prescription). I am a smoker and drinker, but don't think this is the cause...although maybe contributing to the ongoing pain.

I've been tested for strep as well, nothing. Also took a round of antibiotics which did nothing.

I'm going to the specialist in a few weeks, ear/nose/throat. Hoping they can explain something cause just like you, its beginning wear on me.

Well, did either of you get a diagnosis? What was it? It sounds like what my girlfriend has. Are there general diagnoses given here?

throat and ear pain
I went to an ear/nose/throat (ENT) specialist, he commented on acid reflux. Suggested some changes to my diet (taking out high acidic foods...tomatoes etc), but truth be told, I didn't and the pain just went away randomly. I mentioned that I'm a cronic gum chewer to my doctor and that also results in acid reflux...so I've cut down on that.

I will say though, that over that period of time that I was experiencing the pain, my diet had changed in that I was eating more and putting on weight, I'm back to my regular 170lbs and making sure not to snack too much...perhaps that was a contributor???

hi...

Tensluv, u arent alone. Just like ingenue74, im also experiencing chronic and severe sore throat. It feels irritated, inflamed and raw. in fact, i noticed there is some red streaks!!!! Everything started in february with this annoying need to clear up my throat all day...non stop. Every time i had coke, my voice wore up. (i dont drink it anymore). I thought my allergies were bothering me..since i suffer from many types of food and enviromental ones. Anyway, 2 months ago, it got worse....Besides the extra mucus i have in the back of my throat after i eat, i started burping and having acid reflux!!!!! For first time in my life, i felt a heartburn.....HORRIBLE!! I went to see my PCP and said i have GERD. Well, he prescribed me Pepcid. 5 days later i got worse...OMG. I woke up naseaus...with a bloated stomach. He changed my prescription for Omeprazole. It has been over a month with no improvement. So, now im taking nexium and besides all my symptoms, now i have diarrhea.
This thursday im going to see an ENT to check my throat. My PCP thinks its GERD ......but...will see.

HOpefully my journey helps.

does anyone here also have unexplained chest pain (sternum pain) that comes and goes on either side?

Over the past 3 months I've had a sore throat that ranges from no pain to bothersome (especially if my ears ache). Everyday I wake up my throat is red, but my ENT says my lymph nodes are fine and it just looks like a sore throat. I don't know what the cause may be. I've had throat cultures and blood work turn up negative and I have a nasal spray (fluticasone) and zyrtec-D OTC everyday. My energy level seems to lack as well. Things just haven't been the same since I first got sick 3 months ago with what I thought was a head cold.

My daughter is expeariencing the same symptoms (alternating from a headache, to her left ear hurting really bad, and having a sore throat) but ive noticed starting saturday night her breathing pattern at night is messed up also. at times she will miss a breath n follow it with with 2 deep raspy ones. I called a nurse at 5pm but i only asked her about the ear ache because thats what was bothering her for most of the day n i thought perhaps it was swimmers ear... but by 7pm on her ear was fine n her head starting aching... 11pm she woke up with her throat hurting n now at 3am it was back to her ear really hurting. Im quite worried about this but with me not having insurance i hesitate taking her to urgent care (since yesterday was sunday n now today its MLK Jr. day) if anyone has some seriously helpful information about this I'd so greatly appreciate it.

thanks

This sounds similar. DOeas anybody get really bad wax from the ears? We have had a series of issues all related. It took several moths to get the answers. Some things to try are to flush the ears properly. My toddler had a bug in her ear & it bothered her just like the mentioned symptoms. We as amercans are facing new issues with the same creaters. Parasites, bugs, and meat not properly cared for or cooked can cause harm to us humans. Invasive bugs too can get into part of us while we sleep so we are not aware. It can cause many of the syptoms mentioned. Every person seems tobe suffering & for that I feel your pain! Try to rule out things 1 by 1. this can be helpful for the doctor too. Take notes on a calender or planner & see if that helps. Check your living place for molds, close neigbors that smoke, or possible dust mites and or carpet bettles. If you have skin issues it may also be a sign of an insect or bed bugs. It can all be very disrupting to humans of all ages. Good luck to you all. By the way, be very careful taking too many pills or meds. Only as needed, these meds stop you from reading what the body is telling you. I too have been constatly given meds but it is not always wise to treat just symptoms. Look for the bigger picture & find a doctor that listens & it helpful. They too can not always be aware or interested, after all they are business people.

Have had sore throat, earache and headache for 4 weeks now
I have been having the same problem for 4 weeks now. I also went to the Dr because I thought I had strep only to find out that I had an ear infection. I have been on two antibiotics and have tried gargling saltwater, drinking ginger tea etc. Nothing helps. i am also a singer which it is interfering with. Every time I try and sing my ears and throat hurt so bad that it is unbearable and I loose my voice. Has anyone found anything that works or answers?

Sore throat ,headaches, earache - Anemia??
I have had the same thing. Sore throat on and off for about 5 weeks,Headache and earache, the doctor cant see anything other than inflammation of the throat. I did my Blood Pressure and is was low 90/63- and I think that these symptons might be caused by anemia so am being tested for this. I also went to the chiropractor to rule out any spinal problems causing the crushing headaches. Maybe get your blood checked for infection and haemoglobin just to be sure. It took a lot of research to find out that that might be ther cause. I just dont feel well. swollen glands even near my ear, sores on my ear canal. Have felt better with the headache by taking iron tablets, but need to know what type of anemia it is, if it is that.

sore throat and ear pain
Ok, so I have one sided sore throat. Feels like popcorn kernels are constantly back there. Also, on same side my ear hurts. I am a nurse and had a fellow co-worker use otoscope to look into my ear at the drum which according to her is very swollen and reddened and had some dried blood. I too have tried antibiotics and steroid drops. They did not work, neither did antibiotics by mouth for the sore throat. I just recently had a lady tell me that apple cider vinegar was a treat all so I was willing to try very skeptical being a nurse and all but at that point whatever. So every night for the past 3 nights I have instilled a small amount of apple cider vinegar into my affected ear and now I have no pain still somewhat of a full feeling. For the sore throat I mix half cup of apple cider vinegar two tablespoons of honey and warm water gargle and swallow small amounts at a time, now the throat is still a little sore but the redness has gotten a lot better and it isn't so difficult to swallow. Hope this helps some of you others.

Wierd sore throat and ear pain
I googled chronic sore throat and ear pain to see what came up because I have had this going on for 4 weeks now after I got a sinus infection. The omnicept/omnicef antibiotic I was on did seem to clear up the sinus infection but the sore throat and ear tube pain (especially after 4 in the afternoon) is horrible and not improving. I've tried gargling with salt water, apple cider vinegar/honey, hot packs...they do make my ears feel good, but no lasting relief. The regular doc said my ears didn't look bad and my throat doesn't look that bad either, but it feels horrible. It almost feels like I've pulled all the muscles in the upper palate/tonsil area when I swallow, yawn, or move my tongue from side to side, but when I actually poke the tissue back there it isn't sore. I have a ton of mucus drainage, sharp stabbing pains in the eustachian tubes with a burning sensation. My one ear has a little more wax then normal, but not too bad. My lymph nodes are a little swollen. No fever. I also started getting a lot of goop in my eyes during the night. Kinda crusty in the morning, but it doesn't seem to accumulate during the day and am not light sensitive. I am heading to an ENT in a week. Very puzzling. I'm also coughing a lot, but I think it's just because of mucus getting down my windpipe since after I cough for awhile I'll get some up and then I stop coughing. I'm a little more exhausted than usual, but who can tell when you have two kids under 4 years old, a farm, and a job? I think the wierdest thing is how it is so awful from about 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. but not so bad during the other part of the day. Oh and I don't have heartburn don't smoke or drink caffiene.

Hello,
I have similar problems: Pain one side of my throat. Hurts to yawn or swallow. Pain in one ear. I sometime even feel pressure behind my eyes and in my jaw. It started about 4 months ago after I had ear infection, and took antibiotics for it. My blood work now is normal, indication this most likely is not an infection, and my lymph glands are not swallen. I was wondering if anyone gave you a diagnosis yet?

My GP thought I may have Salivary Gland Stome, or some sort of inner ear bone imflamation or sth. I am referred to a NET now to see...

Chronic sore throat and ear pain
I'm going through the same thing, sore throat for 6 months now, nothing has helped. Tried antibiotics, nexium and prilocec and still no help. But I will say for the people above that have pain later in the day or wake up with pain in their ears, you should get your bite adjusted on your teeth and if that doesn't fix it have a bite guard made, just lay of the hard chewy food and gum and see if it gets better. If it does then you know your teeth are causing the problem, I'm a dentist and I see this problem every day... I just wish I could figure out why my throat hurts!!! Good Luck Everyone....Surprised)

on going sore throat/sinus problems
About 4 weeks ago I had a very sore throat, and sinus infection. The doctor put me on Bactrim and I developed a reaction to it. So they instead put me on a z pak. I have been having sinus problems since Dec. 2010, and have been taking zyrtek D. I finished the z pac last over a week ago, and my throat still hurts. I have symptoms of sinus congestion/drainage. The office that I work at has had a mold problem. I bought my own test kit from Home Depot, and the test came out positive. The owners of the building are not doing anything about the mold problem, and are actually denying that it exists. I don't currently have health insurance, and it would be very costly for me to have medical tests done. I bought some oregano oil, which is suppose to kill any mold/fungus in the body, so I am going to try that for now. My throat is almost like a itchy scratchy pain that does go away for a while with Motrin. I hope everyone finds an answer for their throat issue, as I believe the not knowing is worse than the pain itself.

throut, ears, and left chest pain. doesnt go away
i have this throat, ears, and left chest and back pain for three months now. the throat pain increases as i go through the day and i feel it in the whole front neck side and recently cough. i have no problem swallowing food, but pain when swallowing saliva. when i open my mouth i see my throat kinda rough and red. went to many ENT doctors and tried acid reflux treatments, many antibiotics and anti allergies, vitamin c but no use. i made many tests including blood screen, T3 and T4 tests, throat swap, x-ray to the chest and neck. found the following, throat and ear congestion. also found Acute bronchitis and herniated disc in neck (found by x-ray). now i took a sick leave for one week and changed my toothbrush, toothpaste and the room i sleep in hoping to wake-up and its all gone. i forgot to mention that am also an x- smoker, and stopped smoking for 5 months now before those symptoms started.

I found that site first and it scared the heck out of me! I've had a really bad sore throat for two months. I've been through two rounds of antibiotics and steroids. My blood tests say I have Epstein-Barr (EBV or mono). They say 95% of adults test postitive for it. I'm 58 years old, and was never diagnosed with mono as a kid. I went on a gluten free diet (something I read said it helps with EBV) about a week ago, but I can't tell any difference yet.

The ENT guy I saw yesterday gave me a compounded prescription for a gargle medication. It has benadryl, steroids and teracycline in it, It tastes lovely (sarcasm). I've only used it twice, but I'll report back if it helps. He told me if the gargle doesn't work, the only thing that will clear this up is a long term, high dosage of steroids.

I think I'll try the lemon, honey and cayenne gargle too--what have I got to lose?

Has anyone gotten a diagnosis for this yet? Or does it go aweay after a while??
I've had a tight-sore throat, tight-sore chest, ear pressure/pain and noticeable tinnitus that's been slowly getting worse over the past 5 weeks. No fever. Possibly related have been a sore GI tract over that same time, but I've also changed my diet to nearly gluten free & I might be reacting to some of the new flours.
I've been on multiple construction sites in the central valley of California this past summer so I requested testing for Valley Fever - no sign of it. Also had a chest x-ray - no sign of infection. I'm on antibiotics/sinus meds/antihistamines.... we'll see if anything helps...

I have been experiencing issues w/ my throat since July of this year. The pain is in the middle of my throat. This is more like a burning sensation type of pain. I have been to 3 Ents. I have taken antibiotics & steroids & truth be told, depending on the infection, I don't think antibiotics help, especially if the condition is chronic (also, one doc diagnosed it as pharyngitis). The steroids I have taken helped, I may feel symptoms here & there but now my doc wants me to take an allergy test to find out what is causing this pain. I've never had allergy issues, but I guess I will take the chance and see if this will solve my issue. Have anyone ever taken an allergy test and did the outcome help w/ taking care of the pain.

Maybethis
I don't know about you guys but the term for my problems is

Chronic Pharyngitis., can be caused by Allergies (mold, pet, pollen, etc.) , nasal polyps, deviated septum in turn causing mouth breathing at night. Can also be caused by GERD (Acid Reflux) which can also cause mouth breathing at night and sleep apnea. keep in mind that many people that have acid reflux are asymptomatic., As far as Acid reflux goes it seems alot of people have h. pylori, food intolerance, functional problems like a hiatal hernia, high or low stomach acid and or other stomach enzymes. Finally there are viral, bacterial, fungal infections (these might develop as secondary infections to the actual cause). Also could be cause from overuse of the voice such as screaming or singing. Might be residual pain after the original cause of the damage is gone. Laser ablation of the nodules and hypertrophic mucosa can be done easily using Co2 laser.

As for myself I was positive for strep, took z-pack, negative for strep pain still persists, took steroidal allergy medicine, pain still persisted, treated with prilosec then prevacid, then carafate and gaviscon. I would like to note my stomach felt absolutely fine before they put me on stomach meds now I have constipation, gas, heartburn, sour stomach, crams etc. Now I am trying to fix my stomach on top of my throat. Now I am taking flonase and singular for allergies. It is helping with my stuffed up nose and itchy eyes but my throat hurts worse than before I started taking the allergy meds.I am cautiously optimistic that it might be the sensation of the nodules healing themselves. Plan on getting a scratch test or whatever done. My problem is probably because of mold/mildew and/or pet allergies and overuse of voice. I should have investigated this instead of listening to my silly doctors suggestions of gerd without doing any tests.
